MINI2 Drives the MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Tuning Kit

Since rumours began of a light-weight Cooper S limited edition, we’ve been itching to get hold of one and having some fun. June 21st 2006, it finally happened…

Let me just start by saying from now on I’ll be calling the MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Tuning Kit the “Works GP”. Quite frankly after hours holding on for dear life around the Adria International Raceway at the wheel of one these little beasties, the full name is just too much for my poor little fingers to take right now. I know, I can feel the sympathy as I type and truly appreciate being in your thoughts. Given the stunning imagery below now might also be the time to state that no, I’m not available for modeling work just now!

The launch event for the Works GP took place at the Adria International Raceway in Italy. An appropriate choice of location given the fact that the car is completed at Bertone, and the track is extremely twisty, something that suits any MINI perfectly.

MINI Going Retro & Getting Funky in 2006 (April Fool)

New Colour Schemes Hark Back to Halcyon Days

MINI are thought to be planning a real retro-fest for the last of the current generation MINI line, with new colour schemes to be introduced as a limited run towards the end of production. The new colours originate from the Classic Mini’s heyday back in the 1960s and 70s.

Apparently, MINI wants to go out with a bang and show some flare to give the last of the current generation a really unique and special send off, but those old enough to remember the “good ol’ days” of British Leyland may not be so excited about the planned kaleidoscope of colours as those not so familiar with the colour schemes of the past may be.

MINI Cooper S Works GP - More Rumours

Following on from our initial exclusive reports on a planned lightweight S…

And the official preview unveiling at Misano in Italy last October (see here: www.mini2.com/article326.html) it seems MINI have been listening to feedback, and working on the finishing touches (for example, the car’s interior which was not even available to preview at Misano) of the Works GP Tuning limited edition MINI Cooper S.

From the rumours we’ve been hearing, the good news is that weight is down, and power is up. Power output apparently has settled at around 230 bhp, but more interesting is the fact that at least on major component, the huge clamshell bonnet, is due to be constructed using lightweight aluminium, and other panels still could be changed from standard specification to trim off some of the bulk.

Insider reports we’ve been heard since Misano hint that many aspects of the car have been tweaked, fettled and finished, and the version due to go on show at this years Geneva motor show will, hopefully, address many of the concerns raised by those who’ve been following the story since the rumours of this car first began more than a year ago on MINI2. Time will tell, but we’re optimistic.
