| I think that in most states you pay based on where you register the vehicle, indeed, you actually pay when you register the vehicle. Here in the Washington DC area, there are dealers in all three jurististions - VA,DC,MD and the dealer handles the paper work to register (and pay the tax) in the juristiction where you live, not where you buy.
Of course, each one can have a different tax, and if you live in a city where there is a sales tax both for the town and the state, you pay. Tom F.
