It could be a number of things. My a/c went on the blink in my 206 GTI - high pitched whining - except that was at all engine speeds. Turned out to be the bearings and the whole unit had to be replaced (which is expensive I can tell you)! Don't want to worry you, but it could be an early sign of a possible future failure. Might be worth speaking to the service guys about it.
