I`m not sure there is an easy fix to this without having the internal latch mechanism replaced again. As already stated it is a common fault on early cars, & the replacement is a different part number ...which normally fix`s things.
I too had to bungee & rope the hatch down on my 2002 MCS until I could get to the dealer {which for me is only half hours drive away }
