Ultimately (apart from filtering) the intake design has one function. To allow the maximum mass of air (oxygen is the bit we want) through. It is a combination of 2 criteria that effect this goal.
1) Minimum possible pressure drop (partial vacuum) through it.- The higher the pressure (ie nearer ambient ) the better .
2) Colder intake air temp. Quite simply a 'bucket full of cold air has more air (by weight) in it than a bucket full of warm air'. -As 21% of 'each bucket 'is oxygen ,we get more oxygen in for a given volume.
Anyone can chuck more fuel ,its getting air in thats the difficult bit.
