There is a 'black hole' in spacer width between around 7mm & 13mm, where it is too thick to be plain disc yet to thin to be spigoted (hubcentric). I had the pleasure of cutting another companys 10mm thick wheel spacer for a TT in half to prove the point ,at the thinest point the wall section was .016" (0.4mm ) thick!
With 'plain disc' spacers there is still around 5-6mm of location depth in the centre, however as most wheels have a chamfer around the bore this can reduce down to say 2-3mm ,that is perfectly OK . On my car I have 2mm of engagement depth, bear in mind the hub has a steel ring with a wall thickness all the way round of about 5mm ! You are never going to shear that off, even if the wheel bolts were all backed off a half a turn.. A little trick with most aftermarket wheels is to reverse the locator ring in the centre of the wheel so the location no longer has a huge chamfer. I do it on all my OZ wheels, just need to remove the spring clip grind the little lip off, then tap the rings back in back to front
No centre engagement at all is not good and not recommended.

Thanks Roland
That is what I was looking for.
