One other reason is they're very cheap to replace, almost throw away, and that helps with insurance costs etc. (as well as general running costs). These factors also came into play with the update, they've tried to make panels, lights etc take impacts better, the MINI is very expensive to repair at the moment with almost ANY frontal impacts.
