Your current number goes back into the DVLA 'pot' when you put your new one on, so you need do nothing with it. Usually, but not always, the original number is re-assigned if you sell the car or transfer your private plate off for any other reason.

The cheapest place for 'regular' plates is www.dvla-som.co.uk as they don't put a mark-up on like the others, but if you are after a Northern Ireland plate (mostly 3 letters and 4 numbers) or an 'ageless' plate you will need to check out one of the private firms.

Personalised number plates are exactly what they say they are, so don't worry about what other people think or whether they think they are good value or not. If you want one, get one!
