Sump Bung problems on 2001 cooper over 80K miles

Anybody had a problem with the thread wearing on the sump bung after 80K miles?

I have one of the first Cooper's and it was serviced yesterday for the 6th time and I get a call from the garage to say that the thread is broken due to wear!

The question is how can a thread wear when it it has been only undone 6 times? If its due to vibrations then surely its a manufacturing fault or poor design.

The garage says this is a common fault with BMW's in general since the sump is cast in aluminium and not steel. They are also saying it is not classed as a latent defect . I suspect a dodgy mechanic because I have never known a sump bung thread to wear ever.

I look forward to your comments.

Andy
