Tree Sap

I've got a small, inch long smear of tree sap on a door I can't get off. The car has been washed (before I realized it was there), but to no effect. It's got dirt in it and sort resembles the last sticky stuff you get left when you peel a price sticker off, if you know what I mean. Obviously if I used some sort of abrasive surface I could get it off, but I don't want to damage the paint. Does anyone know of a substance or method for removing this sort of thing? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
