For natural clumping litter we had one from Costco that was made with clay. It worked pretty well and wasn't too dusty, at least until you got right to the end of the bag.
I've heard good reports about keeping cats from scratching things with tape with the sticky side out. That might be a good way to protect the couch.
How old is she..? I'm not sure what age they can be taken from their mother, but she looks old enough at first glance. Have you got her a cuddly toy as a surrogate??
The under your feet thing you'll just have to get used to..! Our cat still does that - at the top of the stairs too..! He'll be sorry when we fall down the whole flight and can no longer open the cans for him!
