Thanks for the greetings, it's nice to be down here in the tropical climate. Although it doesn't really feel like Christmas season as I'm walking around in shorts and a T-shirt. Especially after living in Europe for so many years.
About crossing the canal, if your talking about driving a car across one of the two bridges that go over the canal it's free. There are no tolls for using the Bridge of the Americas or the "New" bridge. I cross over them all the time. As for driving in Panama it's very safe, you don't have to worry about Banditos. The Panamanian driving style is a little odd, the buses and Taxis drive crazy but that's life in Central America.
If you want to drive farther south into South America you have to put your car on a ship and go by sea to get to Columbia. The roads are impassable getting into Columbia from Panama. I don't know how much the ferry costs.
