Can't help with the fitting of the gear knob; I'm still trying to work out how to get my hanbrake grip off!

....But both the Alacantara and Leather Gear Knobs/'Shifters' were priced at £41.21 on the John Cooper website last week (they are now sold out btw), I think that's around $80- a lot less than what your being quoted!
I wouldn't think they would cost that much more from the stealer, so if you wanted one you could always have one sent over - it would still cost a lot less than $320!!
