In our Cooper from 2002, having two boys aged 1,5 and 6, we have solved the problem like this:
The little one is sitting in the back (in a Britax chair) behind the passenger chair (that is in itīs most forward place) , travelling backwards (facing the rear hatch) which is the safest way to travel up to the age of 4/5, when they get better neck muscles.
The older one is sitting in the back on a special cushion with a strap that you put the belt in above the shoulder so there is no risk of strangulation.
I have seen some Miniīs with a child seat in the front seat, so there must be a possibility to disconnect or remove the whole airbag.
I suggest you double check with a Mini rep. to get information about all this.
