factory sat nav with aftermarket head unit?

does anyone have factory sat nav with an aftermarket headunit? I am coming from a e39 BMW and have quite a good handle on the sat nav system in that which uses similar components, however the head unit side of things is a little different in the mini.. the E39 uses a monitor with controls and a cd or tape player, with controls for the cd changer/tv/radio and a remote radio module..

as I understand it the mini uses the same mk4 nav computer however I just noticed it also has a head unit... just wondering whether the system makes use of the same remote radio module (BM54) as the E38/39/X3/X5 or if there is an amp in the head-unit?.. also how the two are tied together, and if theres any control over the radio/cd/changer through the nav computer...

Im thinking the screen is purely for nav video from the nav computer while the radio deals with amplification, playback, control, etc...

if someone could clarify the inner-workings and how I got this around my neck so bad I apreciate it!.. Also the implications in terms of connectivity of using the factory nav with an aftermarket head-unit, or if its exactly the same...
