I understand your concern, but it's hard to say if the CVTs are really more fragile than other transmissions. It certainly seems like we've heard too many stories of CVTs failing. On the other hand back in November I started a thread to keep track of a bunch of CVTs to see if any failed and so far not one of the 15 cars has reported a CVT problem. The cars ranged from 10k to 100,000K miles. I think in your shoes I might trade in if I knew for sure I would get a new MINI anyway in the not to distant future. In my case I've always intended to keep my MINI for a long time so I'm going to stick with it despite the possibility that the transmission won't last. Currently mine has 75,000 miles and no problems.
