Has any one noticed this on the Auto Trans.

My 2007, Week 20 build Cooper S with auto box will hold for a two seconds on the flat before it starts to move in reverse when shifting from Park to Reverse.

Is this a problem or is it a form of the Hill Assist?

Felt like a problem at first, then I remembered my test drive with the manual box with the hill assist (wonderful), but I'm not sure if this is what is happening.

I have not tried this a yet on a hill, but would be interested if others have noticed.

Not sure what you mean but it should take a sec for the trans to change gears but not a full two seconds.

Hill Assist shouldn't affect the reverse gear should it? For me, it's only noticeable when i let go the barke on a steep hill.. It holds the car steady long enough for me to put my foot on the accel.

OK Have done a bit more testing
I tried this with the R56 Cooper S auto box with DSC Week 20 build.

Parked on an incline (going up the hill)
Put the auto in N with my foot on the brake, shifted to R and took my foot off the brake quickly, the car holds for a couple of seconds and then accelerates backward (downhill) V. rapidly. Repeated several times.

Then turned the car around to point downhill. Put the auto in N with my foot on the brake, moved the stick to D and released the brake as quickly as possible. The brakes hold for a couple of seconds as before and then accelerates down hill. Repeated several times.

But it is not of much benefit due to the fact you must have the brake pedal depressed to move the auto stick from N to R or to D. So when on a slight incline it feels like there is a hesitation in the gear box, which used to mean (old days) an adjustment was required to the box.
So just a heads-up so as to save someone some aggravation.

United-Kingdom R56 Auto Problems

I bought an R56 Auto in March 07 for my wife, after over 3 years of the previous R53. The only problem with the R53 was a leaking sump gasket which was fixed after 3 visits to Ocean Falmouth. A very good, fun car.

The R56 is a catalogue of faults, from an unresponsive gearbox to boot lid coming open, sunroof air noise and leaking into the car. The build quality is something akin to a car produced by BL 30 years ago on a Friday!

How the dealer can't fix the faults is beyond me, but I have today told them if it is not fixed within the next 2 weeks it will be rejected, and the second (CooperS on order) car will be cancelled.

I'm bringing threads back from the dead. Mine does the same thing. I'm actually glad to hear it's not specific to my coop.

I might be missing something, however this sounds less like a problem and more like a feature being, as you quite rightly mentioned, Hill Assist.

It will hold the car on an incline for a couple of seconds, though as soon as you depress the loud pedal the HA will lift and allow you to accelerate away.
