How long before someone puts a noisy dump valve on the R56's turbo... any bets? :P

NOOOOOO! NOT A FLANGE!!!!!!!!

Whoa! Sorry - just woke up from a nightmare....

Looking at that second photo brings back some repressed memories of the Classic Mini exhausts. Anyone who's had one with the stock cast manifold knows what I'm talking about...

It's the same article they say in the specs that the GTI is running 26.1psi of boost, and the R56 has electrohydraulic steering; the first of which is not likely, the second of which is totally false. Not a credible write-up in the technical accuracy department.

Yeah. That was the very article that made me want to ask the question again...

...I was hoping by now someone in Europe would have taken a close enough look at the turbo and pulled the part number off it (or better yet seen the word "Garrett" or somthing printed on the side), or spoken with their local parts guy to correctly determine the manufacturer.

The turbo I have seen is a KKK unit!

The numbers are:

grosse/Kunds-NR : 75556970-03

Lader-NR : HK7310010225 008

Ausf-NR : 5303 950 0073

You might be surprised how the waste gate is controlled... its not boost that opens the valve! Vacuum is used to hold it shut as naturally its sprung open.

Not calling you wrong but the engine I have stripped is a BW KKK!!

So unless they are using 2 suppliers one of us is wrong!

Where have you seen the Garrett? on your car? at BMW group academt UK?

From the pictures I've seen, the turbo looks to be a Borg Warner, like AlexF2003 says.

--->AlexF2003: Have you taken any measurements of the turbo itself? [inducer and exducer diameters for compressor and turbine wheels; housing A/R's?]

@AlexF2003, first I must say I have zero experience with turbo motors.
I only read it @motoringfile:

arr ok Maaij ! - I was hoping you'd seen a few - I've only seen two and only 1 in detail and that engine is a fairly early one

"Have you taken any measurements of the turbo itself? [inducer and exducer diameters for compressor and turbine wheels; housing A/R's?]"

nope - but I can do if you like... there doesn't seem to be any AR info on the outer casing but thats not that uncommon.

Yes... and I kinda think MotoringFile (as reliable as they are) are just repeating what Winding Road stated.

It wouldn't be completely unheard of to have a couple different manufacturers for the same PSA twin scroll design. I just was hoping for some hard factual info backed up by part numbers and such (Thanks AlexF2003). Before I would even consider any type of tuning or add ons for the new car I want to know what's on there as stock.

I believe it's a Borg Warner KKK from what I remember from the official R56 launch event. The Garrett thing was told to me by someone also at the event and then was in Winding Road. However I'm pretty sure that is incorrect.

Yep.

3-for-3 of the R56S cars I've seen this week were clearly badged as KKK units.

MotoringFile and Winding Road are indead incorrect unless MINI is getting them from multiple suppliers.
