Is this what everyone is experiencing, the noise dissapears as you apply the revs.. just sounds rubbish when sitting still( i know i know keep moving then) but living in the south east thats not that easy!! uzzed |

Offline | idle HI Olly, The guy that bought my old 03 MCS came round to see the new one and have a play, the old tritec engine was way quieter at idle!!! although the steering was whining like an old man! Maybe with some running the nature of the new engine noise will dissapear? keep having to check the oil!!! |

Offline | Is the new engine a common rail, direct injection type design? My Golf which was an FSI (fuel stratified injection!!!) engine sounded just like a diesel when new when idling or pulling away. I think this sound went away once well run in, or perhaps I just got used to it. Red/Black R56 Cooper |

Offline | I started mine up today with the radio off and thought I was driving a diesel, once warmed up it is Ok though. The backfire on overun is a loud metallic "crack" rather than the pop pop burble of the R53 really getting to like it now. ![]() |

Offline | Yes, I think it may be a result of the direct injection as the 2.0 Turbo VW engine has similar sounds. It would be interesting to know the specific reasons for this. Perhaps it's an extremely rapid burn of the fuel/air charge? |

Offline | The FSI engine runs in a very "lean burn" mode at less than 3k revs to help fuel consumption. I think that minimal fuel is forced in under high pressure, or something like that! Red/Black R56 Cooper |

Offline | I've noticed this on my r56 cooper, just an unusual sound, compared to what my 06 cooper was anyway. Its almost like a electric car or something. ![]() PW/B R56 Cooper is here!!! Lovin it, Lovin it, Lovin it!!!! |

| Deals Gap Junkie | DI injectors are louder than port injectors due to the higher injection pressure. Most likely the "diesel" sound is actually the injectors. Try putting an acoustic mat [like a thick blanket] over the injectors and hear the improvement [obviously don't drive around like that, duh!] ![]() |

Offline | yes the fuel can be injected at 120 bar..for us americans tahts 1740 psi...so that will be loud as hell. I used to work for saturn and the saturn sky redline was DI as well and the injection system was loud as hell on that thing. |

Offline | You should hear it on a motorcycle! My bike uses a common rail direct injection into it's three cylinders. With the weird 120 crank and cam timing... it REALLY sounds like a deisel at idel. I get some weird looks until I crack the thing open and I'm off like a shot. ![]() Founding member of R56 Anonymous: "Hello. My name is Mike. I'm a driving enthusiast... and I still like the R56" |
