Offline | that sounds like the "diesel sound" that many have reported. do a search on these forums, i'm sure you'll find lots of threads. i think it goes away after a while... but still, strange! (unless your Cooper is a Cooper D ) |

Offline | Yep, ticking in time with the engine RPM's... it's the DFI solonoids. Normal. It won't go away. Now if it starts to knock out of time and doesn't go away upon warm up... take it in. ![]() Founding member of R56 Anonymous: "Hello. My name is Mike. Offline | Z4... DFI sounds just the same. There's just a lot more sound deadening material under the hood. Lift it up and stick your head under there. You'll hear it there, too. Did nobody test drive and check this car out before buying? If it wasn't a corcern then, why such a big deal now? I think it's a symptem of spending too much time in the Faults and Fixes forum, myself. ![]() ![]() Founding member of R56 Anonymous: "Hello. My name is Mike. | TYPE R GT VTEC POWERED | Do you thi nk anybody would buy one sounding like that, i doubt it. Spend £22k on a car you would expect a lot less noise from the engine . Mini are b@@@@@ting about this being normal. The cost implacations of a recall against aa small amount of engines going south speak for themselfs. Mine is in again being repaired under warranty ,ive told the dealer if i has to back in again then iam going to start the rejection process. I could get a good 330diesel from BMW for the money . This will be the very last Mini fro me .RANT OVER |

![]() Addicted to MINI... | If you open the bonnet the engine sounds like that, its no dig deal really because when you get going the engine sounds great! In my cooper I havent gone over 4k but a lovely growl begins to grow at 3k rpm. Im sure those of you on here with a cooper will agree..yes? |

Offline | You did. Many more are spending much-much more for the Z4 (and new Z4 coupe). But maybe I'm misunderstanding what your dealer keeps repairing on your car? It sure does, doesn't it? I for one love it... and am willing to live with the DFI noise. Coming from a motorcycle using a rattly common rail system (a brit bike, too... hmmm...), the car doesn't bug me (ever have anyone as if you BIKE was a diesel!?! ). The two issues I've heard so far that really concern me are the failing cam chain tensioner (or the oil circut leading to it), and the gearbox problems some have experienced (some, TWICE!!! So sorry Poppy). Other than that, this car rocks. ![]() Founding member of R56 Anonymous: "Hello. My name is Mike. I'm a driving enthusiast... and I still like the R56" |

| MINI2 Newbie | I think this "diesel" sound is nothing to worry about at all. In ten years all petrol engines will have direct injection and will all tick...tick..tick...tick...tick...tick...(Is a bit annoying eh?) Open the bonnet of an idling VW Golf GTI V or Audi with FSi and you will hear the same thing. It really is nothing to worry about. Diesel cars have ticked since the German dude invented them... Also remember that this new engine is prob the most advanced engine on the road today, it has direct injection, variable valve timing AND lift (Valvetronic), high compression and twin scroll turbo, all this in the name of efficiency...which it is. Just enjoy the car, and dont sweat the small stuff ! |

| yellow 07 mcs driver | yeah mines makes that sound too but it doesnt sound that loud. i think its because your hood is open or the camera is magnifying the sound. well my friends mercades 230 kompressor has the same sound so i was wondering if its coming from the turbo? |

Offline | Since the Kompressor uses a supercharger, and the R56 uses a turbo... I would say no. That, combined with the fact that it's been pretty well documented what the ticking is (if you're willing to accept MINI's explination): MotoringFile » Archive » Ask MF: Why Does my 2007 MCS Tick? ![]() Founding member of R56 Anonymous: "Hello. Offline | I agree. This shouldn't be 'normal', and it might actually be a conscious decision on the part of BMW to reduce the quality control and 'cash-in' on the marque. I can't say I agree. My parents used to have a Z4M and whenever I borrowed it, my pals would always want to hear the engine with the hood up. We were constantly comparing the sound of that with the sound of the Corvette engine a guy round the corner had. In the end, the consensus was that the Corvette engine had a better volume, but that the German-engineered BMW had a much better note and 'tightness' about the sound. Believe me, the number of times we were meticulously compared BMW vs. Vette (the group was pretty much split down the middle as to which engine everyone preferred), we would have noticed an odd sound like that! ![]() I don't know if it's a hypochondriac syndrome, but it is strange that nobody noticed it on their test drives. But then, sometimes it's difficult to detect a problem in one place, when a nice feature somewhere else distracts you. lol ![]() * * * * * NeuroBeaker Proud owner of "Zeus" (a 'slightly modified' 2004 Mini ONE). |
