It has arrived! Got it fitted but not had much chance to try it yet. First impressions are that theres a little more noise when applying the throttle, the engines response is quicker too. Outright power seems to be up also as the car is really struggling to get power down above 4000rpm in second now. I will continue this review in a week or so with economy etc included too, but so far I am impressed as I wasnt expecting any difference so I would highly reccomend it if you want a more sporty drive
Oh and its quite funny that the ITG logo is upside down!!

DIY Latest Mod ...

had some advice from one of the ecu tuning companies recently on how to improve the airflow through the std R56 Cooper resonator box while still keeping the stock look ... works a treat;

- improved throttle response, more torquey
- no more diesel engine clatter when pulling off with cold engine
- less (fake) brum brum (induction) noise when engine is warm
- quieter cruising

need to measure 30-50 and 50-70 times and mpg to be sure; however butt dyno definitely tells me there's better pick up

also pumped the tyres up to recommended pressures so am not sure if it's this or the 'mod' that's making the wheels spin when booting it in 1st & 2nd

any ideas what I've done ?

once I'm convinced of it's longevity I'll reveal more - maybe need to get Lohen / Vecchio / GTT Roland to fabricate & sell it ....

btw spoke to nice guy at Vechio the other day & read the Redline filter group tests as suggested (itg WON by 5bhp over K&N, Green, Std filter etc on Civic Type R) - I now definitely plan to get the ITG panel ... once the first handmade batch have sold & the price comes down to £40ish for the regular production ...

ANYONE ELSE INTERESTED IN A GROUP BUY ON THE itg PANEL FILTER PLEASE POST DETAILS HERE !

Mr Vecchio - does it fit the Cooper D as well (am being too lazy to go look for D filter size & shape on real OEM etc)

Have you drilled the airbox? Though that would affect the warranty...please tell! I doubt the filter will come down much in price as its hand made but its definitely worth it so go for it. Was the redline test panel filters or cai's?

nice try but nope;

have 'sourced' a 50ish mm dia pipe that fits neatly & invisibly inside the resonator box diverting the air from the intake pipe directly through the box rather than the airflow being slowed down & disrupted (wasted) by going up the tubes. Res box is effectively just a cosmetic sleeve facilitating the connection

may go to Demon Tweaks to see if Samco sell a suitable size / length hose ...

Redline mag test was cone / panel replacement filters

am hoping itg mass produce the R56 item soon

opem bonnet

JUST MEASURE distance from where inlet hose connects to rear bend in resonator box ;

find a 50-51ish mm dia tube/pipe of the same length

take the inlet hose off by squeezing & pulling it forward

insert the tube

put the inlet hose back making sure the tube/pipe is central so the hose fits around the outside of it

shut bonnet

go play

Sounds very interesting J1JPE, is there any chance of a picture or 2 as i'm not quite getting it yet?

Which issue of redline was the filter test in?

Many Thanks

pics attached - resonator box is the big black thing to right of the engine;

first pic (view from side) shows the cold air intake pipe which runs from the front right (where the headlight sits when the bonnet is closed) disconnected

you insert the tube into the big hole at the front of the resonator box and re-fit the intake hose around the outside of it ...

2nd pics shows the before & after with the intake pipe connected

Filter tests were in Dec & Jan issues of Redline (the ones out in Nov & Dec 07)

maybe Leo from Vecchio will scan & post ...?

Do you know how many out-take holes there are in the resonator box? I could only feel the one at the front. Im assuming from what youre saying that the are none past the bend...

3 or 4 out-take holes and none after the bend, you may be able to see better in the attached pic

Thats a bit strange, I have 6 or so holes, a big one at the entrance then a few small ones then a big one again before the bend then 2 after.... Anyway I have taken a slightly different approach to the problem...I got a tube from b&q but I wasnt happy putting a pipe in which had quite big ridges and wasnt that snug a fit so I decided to block the holes in the most minimalistic fashion. I got a sheet of platic laminate and cut a rectangle to stick to the roof of the air box covering the holes. i also put a small strip over my holes after the bend. Works a treat!

Good Solution fella;

from my pic & memory there were 3 or 4 out-take holes - I presumed that the air has to come back down (in) so the last few were in-takes which wouldn't matter ...

You must have nimble fingers to have stuck the laminate down inside the res box;

Nice work.

Am not an expert on air flow so cant say if a narrower pipe increases air speed / pressure or if your greater volume theory is better because more air gets to the filter even if it's travelling a little slower ... that's the fun of development & testing

despite the heat from the engine, because the air coming in is cold, I dont forsee any issues with the laminate getting warm and peeling off ... keep an eye on it though & let us know how it sounds, affects fuel economy & butt dyno performance

How's the itg ?

It was a tricks business, I used the end of a long spanner to smooth the laminate down. Combined with the ITG the car is more torquey and smoother on cold mornings, id like to get it alongside a stick cooper to see the difference
