Does the intake add or take away gas mileage?

Question... I have a partially blocked scoop on my late 2007 MCS. Does it really need to be removed like it says on Alta's homepage or will the filter sound / fuction okay with it still in place? I really want to know this...

Thanks!

It will be fine. Just Alta say you may see a few HP more because of lower under hood temps. I just drilled out the rest of the unopened holes in the scoop, but removing it completely is the preferred option.

I took mine out completely also. I've seen pics of where people made a wire mesh grill that looked awesome.

Mine just arrived from the states to Australia today

I think I will leave the install till a mate gets back from AMVIV - this will be my first mod so a little wary (even though the Alta instructions look pretty good!)

Is it as easy as everyone says? I am pretty good at taking things apart and putting them back together but never done that on something worth so much... (ie my MCS :P)

I haven't got the Alta, but just for something to do last night I disconnected the stock air box and put on an old K&N cone filter to see what it sounded like and if it made an difference. I am not exaggerating when I say that the whole job (including recording the sound it made on my mobile phone!!!) took less than 10 minutes and all I needed was a torx screwdriver (for the airbox) and a flat headed screwdriver for the jubilee clip. I understand that alta has a extra piece of silicone hose, but again this is literally a case of sliding the silicone hose bend into the stock air pipe and then tightening a jubilee clip over both ends - should take about 5 seconds max! This really is an easy mod and can be put back to original in less than 10minutes or if you have done it before, about 2 minutes!

As this is my first new car im still a little hesitant, however will have a look tomorrow when there is plenty of light - I guess where im also hesitant is that the sound that it makes afterwards will be different, and I wont know if its right or not... I guess being careful i can always put on the OEM one back on...

You could try it out by just disconnecting the air pipe from the stock air box and then starting the car with the air feed pipe open, rev up a few times and you'll get the idea of how it is going to sound Just make sure there is nothing that the pipe is going to 'suck' in before you do it obviously! I did this last night and it sounded really good, adding the K&N filter made no sound difference so its just the same

Well the CAI is now fitted and sounds awesome! . Maybe its the first time that I have been driving without the stereo up at volume (it does sound that sweet), but I am noticing a "knock" that seems to be coming from under the bonnet whenever I give it some gas after easing off (When I am in gear and in motion) It seems to happen even moreso in 2nd gear . It doesnt happen when I am at a standstill (hood open and closed).

Has anyone had this before? I think that it may be the pipe that sits above the turbo inlet tube (OEM) getting tapped into the hood?

I followed the instructions from Alta...In Aus we dont have the electronics component for all the pollution gear so it was a little bit more straight forward. (No MAF sensor)

All that was removed was the box and filter, and then the elbow and turbo inlet tube was clamped to the existing hosing. The hardest part was getting underneath the housing to tighten the bolts.

I might email the guys from Alta or jump on their thread on NAM...
