Offline | Custom CAI Just Fitted Been wanting to do this for a while after reading all the stuff on NAM about it (MINI COOPER :: North American Motoring - CAI for R56 (home made)) So I did some research and ordered a cone filter which arrived this morning. It took about 5 minutes to install and I think it looks really good under the bonnet. Sound wise there is a big difference to standard, it sounds like a blow off valve when you change gear or let off the throttle, and when you really put your foot down you get a nice 'sucking' sound. This is completely manageable, though. Ie under light acceleration there is little to no noise at all, but when you want it you can bring it on quite easily. Its pretty difficult to capture this on video but I have tried my best ![]() I am really pleased with this mod which only cost about £25 for all the bits required and literally 5 minutes to swap between standard and this. Performance wise, without a doubt the car pulls stronger in the high rpms - dont need a dyno to prove that and it seems to have also made my exhaust 'pop' and burble a bit more, which is only a good thing ![]() At the moment my originaly air filter is still in place, but I plan on removing that later today, just trying to figure out how to get it out!! Any questions I'm happy to help Cheers! ![]() Just bought a Mini Cooper S !! Last edited by MINIAC : Apr 12th, 2008 at 07:33 PM. Reason: Fix clickable thumbnails |

Offline | Nice work, I was wondering how long it would take for this simple mod to make it to Mini 2. I have also done this mod to my JCW and also pleased with the result. The bypass valve sound is not for everyone but as I am not normally driving hard I can only just hear it. When I am having fun it is loud and proud, adds to the whole experience really. Here is mine, it has changed slightly recently as I have fabricated a new mounting bracket out of aluminium but you will get the idea. ![]() I will put on a new pic with the bracket when I get the chance to take a pic. |

Offline | Here is what the intake looks like now with the bracket that I have made. The bracket is made by bending and polishing a piece of 30mm aluminium. The pipe is 3" aluminium pipe that has been polished and attached to 3"silicone elbow. The filter is a 3" K@N dual cone. ![]() And this is the way it sounds like in the car, initially I am driving at normal everyday spend and acceleration levels. Then I have opened it up a bit in an area of sufficient speed limit so you can hear the bypass valve and the turbo gulping the air in. During this video the drivers window was open and it was filmed from the passenger seat. ![]() Last edited by MINIAC : Apr 30th, 2008 at 09:36 PM. Reason: Make images clickable thumbnails |

Offline | Mine is a JCW also, is there a difference between the stock JCW intake sound and this one when driven normally? Just wondering if the box produces a certain kind of sound that may be lost with this setup? Is there a particular reason why you went with a 3" filter? Presumably the silver piece near your silicone hose is a reducer?? |

Offline | I found that with the JCW airbox that there was not much sound at all unless you had the stereo off and the window down. With this setup and driving normally it is a bit louder (only just hear it over the stereo) but not annoying at all. Put the foot down and allow the turbo to boost up and it becomes a different story. Sounds a lot more like a turbo sports car and more what I think a turbo mini should sound. Kind of makes it up to me that the supercharger whine is gone. As for the silver piece near the elbow, it is all 3". Yes I know the stock pipe is 2.75" but it does fit just a bit tight. I will eventually change out the stock pipe section once I have a new one fabricated (probably a polished aluminium). The good part is I can swap back to the stock JCW anytime I like because I have not modified it at all, change over only takes 10 mins. |

| MINI2 Regular | To do it on a COOPER S it will be more or less exactly the same. All you have to do is disconnect the inlet pipe from the filter box/housing and connect a cone filter in its place. should only take about ten minutes to put one in and a little longer to make it look as presentable as "Mutley MCS's".
