Bonnet stripes - DIY or BMW?

Hi all,

Im thinking of having the white bonnet stripes added to my blue cooper in the next few weeks.

Ive looked on the Mini site and they quote 44 quid plus labour cost to have them fitted.

I had a look on ebay and some other mini merchandise sites and they sell stripes for as little as 8 quid!

Will the DIY ones look really crap? Has anyone any experience of doing it yourself or am I better just letting the dealership do them?

Thanks!

Get them done by BMW MINI. That way they'll be perfect, and more importantly, you'll know that they are perfect.

True enough I supposed but there are various things you could get BMW to do that could be done equally well yourself - oil change etc

44 quid plus labour seems expensive to stick some white lines on my bonnet

Yes, but you don't see new engine oil from the outside! Stripes are a cosmetic thing and must be perfect. Therefore sticking stripes on your car is a job that must be left to the professionals! Nothing looks worse than stripes with bubbles of air in them, or stripes not exactly in the correct position.

Have you any idea how much labour might be? 10 quid?

TBH i might sound like a tight Ar*e but i wouldnt pay that amount for stripes to be fitted as it can be done yourself with patience, measure up get them straight, get plenty of water underneath the stripe to move it about and line it up, then squeegee all water and air out.

Just dont use washing up liquid in the water.

When the job gets tricky like around badges and over the roof etc then i might consider paying for it to be done.

Thats what I was thinking originally, seems mega steep for basically spraying my bonnet with water. I find it hard to believe they will use any special tools for the job but still charge the BMW premium price.

Its no the tools you are paying for with any graphics shop TBH it the quality of the vinyl, the expertise, and the fact they wont damage your car etc etc

But with most stuff,if i can fit it ill do it, if you mess it up then that will be 20 quid down the drain but if you get it right then thats a bonus as you will have the confidence to do more.

Before i got my MINI i never fitted an Ehaust, Manifold, Lowering springs, stripes, Air filters, Seats, Aerokits, spot Lights, Brakes, oil gauges etc but i done them all without paying.

Could you get it done at a graphics company instead of BMW? Might be a compromise cos you'd get it done cheaper but still a quality job.

Gonna ring MINI pirate for mine, but on my last Cooper I bought some stripes at a Mini show and fitted them in the car park. - three years on, they still look perfect and I know because my Mum now has the car.

I did my viper stripes from front bumper to back bumper - was pretty easy to be fair. Cost me £40. Mum had hers done by MINI and cost over £250 and dont look any better than mine!

I don't think that it should be that hard for a DIY. I assume you have a handyman skill However, I suggest if the total price difference is not that much, just let the dealer do it. If they mess up, you can always scream at them. If you mess up, you can't scream at yourself hehehe
