Question Interior Rattle

Hi,

Has anyone else discovered a rattle on their R56 that sounds like it's coming from within the cabin, around the passenger side? It sounds like a tinny sorta rattle but I can't seem to locate it . I've tried the chrome rings around the vents, the door handle, glove box, and passenger sun visor but turned up nothing! It's beginning to give me a nervous tic, and then today, after having the car "diamondbrited" I noticed a slight crease in the passenger door (a dink!)....I've only had the car since 28th Dec, and it's not possible to be "dinked" where I park so I think it may have happened at the Dealership or before. Anyone know of a cost effective way of removing this small "dink?" Had my previous One for 40 months with not so much as a scratch........

The best way in my opinion would to simply get it done by dentmaster or someone like that. cost you around £60 maybe.

Smile Update On Rattle

Have just returned from the Dealership, and the car is booked in to establish the cause of the rattle. I also mentioned the dink and it is (hopefully) gonna be fixed at the same time....using Dentmaster I think, as you suggested Simon. Used price of chrome mirror caps advertised by Chris at Woodman BMW on this site to get my Dealership to match the price! Should get 'em at the same time......

Smile Rattle Update...Fixed(ish)

Having now picked the car up from the Dealership I am happy to report that the rattle that had been driving me nuts has now disappeared! I believe it was tied in with me having window tints done on the fronts by a third party ....by the time I dropped the car off at the garage this morning the passenger door wouldn't even open!!! That's also fixed, and I have the chrome mirror caps on as well (fitted for free).....but they were unable to resolve the dink on the passenger door in house so Dentmaster are definately going to have to come and look at it. Bang goes another of my (valuable) days off....all in a good cause though. The only trouble with them fixing that rattle is I'm now noticing a rattle from the rear split seats, but it's probably that they aren't fully engaged in the seat releases. I'll save that one for Sunday when I can see what I'm doing....and I can also fit my new uprated headlamp bulbs from mikeythemini.....oh, the deep deep joy of it all!!!

mine has been doing the same, but from the dashboard area on the drivers side, searched the forums and its appears that it is quiet common, a quick trip to the dealer should sort it out?

I have a REALLY BAD RATTLE towards the rear of the car, near where the petrol cap is. Very hard to locate, even had someone sit in the back with the seats down and head in the boot to find it (all under safe conditions of course!) It is very loud and very annoying. I also have the tinny rattle around the front of the dash only when I acceleratequite quickly, seems to be somewhere around the gauges or above the speedo in the dash.

Not happy!

I've got a very small rattle which comes from inside the air vent by the driver's door. Its not there all the time but usually occurs when you accelerate and the revs start to increase. Can't really hear it if you stay at constant revs, so it seems related to the increased strain on the engine during acceleration. Its not a major issue but I would like to think it could be fixed.

matt, ru81, have you both tried the start/stop engine button - put you finger on it when accelerating- mine has a high frequency tinny vibration....def stops when i place my finger on it...the rattle is intermediate..

Further to my earlier post, my car has developed another rattle, this time on the passenger side. I therefore now have two rattles that sound like they are inside the airvents on both the passenger and driver's side of the dashboard. I have only done 160 miles so I'm going to drive it for a while yet before I return it to the dealer for a fix.

Anyone else have this problem?

Snap!

Annoying intermitent rattle somewhere behind/in the airvent on drivers side, as posted elsewhere comes and goes as you rev, up or down hills, very hard to trace. Only minor but VERY annoying.

chirs, try putting your finger on the start./stop button when the rattle comes - is it this? My button rattles a little - intermittent though, but irritates

Thanks Tigger

After about 2 hours of searching I have found that if I apply firm pressure to the top of the black part of the key slot when the engines running the rattle stops but the noise appears to come out of side air vent. its like playing a saxophone But it plays havoc with the driving. Pretty poor fitting really. Suspect several of the annoying rattle reports on here are related to this as it can sound like the front of the dash near the window. But pressure on the key slot cures it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Do you press down on the key, just behind it or the button?

Sorry Ken

Only just logged back on.

Press the key slot housing down just behind the key on the black plastic, at the top and at the centre quite hard and it stops my ratlle. It appears the air vent amplifies the sound and sends you looking in the wrong place. Its a toothache sort of noise you can put up with it then it really gets on your nerves.

HI Chris, well done on isolating this horrible tinny vibration.. I will try your suggestion too, as up to now, I have place my finger on the start/stop button itself.

And you're definitely right about the way the sound seemingly moves. Today i was feeling parts of the door panel and even the door locks (button near the B pillar) for the source...terribly off-putting.

let's cure this together!!!

Know exactly what you mean.

I have thought it was close up to windscreen, under dash, every bit of trim on the door, wheel etc. It was only after you mentioned the start stop button and I had another try that I appear to have found the cause.

Strangely satisfying Its the amplification of the rattle thats SO!!!!

My Mini Cooper R56 turned 6,000 kms yesterday. It has been back to the dealers once about 6/7 weeks ago to get a new radio fitted as the original dispalay was all fuzzy

It's having its second trip back this Thursday for 3 annoying rattles/noises:

1. Dash on Passenger side - getting worse, been there for a few weeks but definitely getting louder and more annoying each day

2. Drivers Door - Quite a light rattle at the moment but reminds me of how the dash sounded at the start so waiting for it to get louder

3. Funny rumbling from the rear, either from the boot or underneath of the car

Hopefully these will get sorted as they are driving me crazy and I'm even tempted to trade the car in if they persist!!!

My car seems to have many different rattles!

At the moment it just seems to be the alloy piece on the passenger door. The alloy dash on the drivers side and passenger side have occasionally rattled! (especially on a hot day - and affected more by accelerating)

Also the plastic ring around the speedo!

The one on the passenger door is really annoying! Almost like a buzzing when i go over rough ground! (think i need to book it in)
