Transmission Noise

Just to say that overall I'm massively impressed so far with Mrs Bert's Cooper. There are some minor niggles (see cracked windscreen post) but I guess these sort of things could be expected with "1st batch of type"

I have noticed a rough dry sounding growl from the transmission at around 2k RPM when under medium/heavy load........

Anyone noticed the same? Not sure if this is a fault or just normal 6sp transmission sound?

Thanks to all those involved for such a good forum brilliant!

Hi Jamie,
I have been repairing cars for over 30 yrs, heard this noise on many makes of cars the problem goes no better or worst with mileage. Report it to your Dealership & await their response, I have made mine aware they are awaiting a response from BMW - i would wait until they have an answer before booking it in.

this may or may not be related. I had my car in at the dealers today as I have found what I can only describe as a rattle/grumble from low down in the engine/underbody at approx 1000rpm to 1500rpm. It happens in all gears at the same rpm, thought it might have been the manifold vibrating off of something metal, but the dealer has said they can't find anything wrong with it. They also said that their demo makes the same noise, so it's obviously not a fault

I would be interested to hear if this is the same fault or if this is something like Popey's fault.... I don't know how the transmission should sound in the "S"...

Hi Stu56,
I also have a sort of grumble/rattle when at low revs pulling off or when in slightly too high a gear.
My feeling is that it could be exhaust related, possibly a heat sheild or something?
Also when I switch off the engine the car shudders slightly! Possibly related.
And my starter also is noisey from a cold start!
Fergal.

thanks for the advice - think i will drop the dealer a note tomorrow regarding this.....

As its a Company car im not too concerned with missing her for a bit - might try and get an S in return for a few days.....

fergal is yours an S, vibration at low speeds definately transmission noise, heard same noise in other manufactures vehicles ie focus/mondeo, dont worry to much about it at present. No shudder when switch off, slight shudder on idle but tickover lower than old model suspect to lower emissions, turn A/C on increases revs and shudder dissapears. ps my car is superb on fuel

Is this related to pulling away when the revs are too low - that is, labouring the car?

You will get a shudder through engine/transmission if it is struggling.

Mine seems to be getting worse now. Sounds like it's very dry. Cant believe this is normal.

I took it back to Victoria Milton Keynes and got them to check the fluid level - they said it was low but didn't have any to top it up!! I've booked back in for the top up in a couple of weeks. I might ask to drive the demonstrator to compare.

Not happy with this noise will keep you posted

not any problems with wind noise, but I do have a bit of a noise of rushing water... The noise I reported has been checked out by the dealer and I have been told that there is no way that it is exhaust related...

we shall wait and see..

Took a Cooper R56 for a test drive today and heard the exact same grumbling noise you mentioned, I guess about 1500 - 2000 revs, in 2nd - 3rd gear. Sales guy said he didn't notice anything, which is a laugh! BERTR56-I'd be interested in any progress you make with Victoria in MK.

30 mph in 3rd gear sounds like a problem to me - you'd only be at about 2,200 rpm. Surely flooring the throttle at that speed is going to make it struggle, and even worse if you're going up a hill.

I don't understand why you wouldn't be in 2nd gear at a more respectable 3,200 rpm ?

Makes me wonder if these strange transmission sounds are just the engine labouring because too high a gear is selected for the road and engine speed ? Anyone got a recording of the sounds they can share ?
