Offline | My MCS is very lumpy on tick over and very jerky when driving from cold! I wonder if it's all related! I love the car though and wouldn't change it for anything else! COOPER S |

Offline | Exactly what I intend to do. 20,000 miles before an oil change is IMO madness, especially after a running in period. All that fine swarf floating around for 18 months or so can't be good Better safe than sorry. ![]() |

| November build Diesel MCS | Ok, the dealer has had the car since Tuesday, it made the noise as in the video i took for them, they ask for some advice from BMW and they replied that it was a normal noise, some make it, some dont. Apparently its an air pump pipe? if you take the pipe off it stops making this noise. Nothing to worry about.... Picking my car up in afew hours, what do you guys think, im no mechanic but that noise is wrong and not normal at all in my eyes. CB |

| MINI2 Regular | Be very wary and ask for their findings in writing. I have been lied to on 2 separate occasions in the last 3 months by MINI, so best to keep yourself right and get them to tell you what they have done and what exactly their findings are.. hope it works out OK.. ![]() |

Offline | Hi Have just listened to this and think it sounds terrible - how can that be normal?! Could you try a different dealer and see if they come to the same conclusion? I have an R53 MCS and it made a noise very similar to this a few times when started from cold but it would not make it for the dealer when I took it to them - typical! It seems to have resolved itself as it no longer happens. I always thought that it was a lack of oil but the levels were fine. |

| November build Diesel MCS | Just a quick update. Got a call today to say that they had another reply from BMW about the noise and that there response was to change the Cam Chain Tensioner. Car is now booked in but have to wait 10 days for the part/parts to come from Germany. CB |

| GP 0380 | That sounds like a misfire almost! I suppose you cant tell if its down on power? There is a similar ticking noise intermitent in my R53 S upon cold start up, but not to that extent, I would take your car back and demand a replacement or a full refund! TBH, im not suprised so many R56 owners have had bother so far. Any new car when it comes out always has the odd problem, but the original BMW mini which I had was horrendous for problems and alot of people had when it was launched. ![]() |

Offline | I have recorded the first start up of mine, wasn't a really cold morning. Video of enginenoise - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Goes in on Tuesday the 13th for 2 to 3 days. Also problems with the Drivers Seat Leather wearing, gearbox noise (pull away), gearbox noise (3rd down to 2nd - very intermittant), bonnet gaps (2nd attempt), Exhaust Tail pipes wonky, rattle from the rear (not sure if it's under the seat or from the sun roof) and it has just developed a whistle from the heater/air con. ![]() |

| November build Diesel MCS | Well, DaveyC, yours sounds like a similar problem to mine. As much as i hate to say it, im glad that someone else has a similar problem as its been driving me bonkers! I couldnt believe that my car could be the only one (although typical of my run of luck lately). If im honest, i kind of get the impression they dont know whats wrong and replacing the cam chain tensioner is the first logical step in the process of elimination. |

Offline | Engineer been and looked at mine today and said it is perfectly normal noise. Its just the engine charicteristic. He said it was the engine waiting for the oil to reach the top of the engine. What a load of rubbish!!! How come it sounds like a tractor some mornings and is not as bad other mornings!!! Surely if it was normal it would do it all the time. The thing is I don't know where to turn! The dealer isn't interested and said wait till the problem gets worse!!! but I want it fixed now , along with the gearbox ![]() COOPER S |

Offline | Could the engine noise "or characteristic" when cold be down to the viscosity of oil when cold? It's a long shot, but need to look at the MIL info for the oil that's been used?? Chip, did you hear this noise from when you first received it? I get my MCS on Monday, will look out for this, and a host of other issues! |

Offline | Hi.Never noticed a thing when I bought it.I had done about 1000 miles when I first heard it! Don't know if to change oil and filter now I have done the running in to see if it makes any difference. All I wanted to here was that it had a fault and that a fix was being looked at rather than being told nothing is wrong with it when I know ther is Anyway enjoy your new Mini. It's a great car even with it's faults!COOPER S |

Offline | After listening to your engine the sound reminds me of big end bearings that are not getting sufficient oil at the correct pressure. If you continue to drive this car you will, if it is lack of oil at the big ends, damage the engine resulting in a big bill for someone. I would leave the car at the dealers until the problem is rectified. I would also make sure that all of this is recorded and BMW notified in writing. I don't think this engine will have and extended life ! Good luck with the problem please post BMW's diagnosis and cure. ![]() |

| MINI2 Newbie | Dont forget this engine has direct fuel injection, like the FSi on the VW range and even the GTI 5 sounds a bit like a diesel when it idles with the bonnet open? Could be part of the noise being heard.?? After all, diesels are "direct injection"... my 5c |
