Offline | Great! This will be an opportunity for you to solve the prob and for everybody has the rattle, to understand what "new parts" are involved. I hope you will have all the product codes at the end of the work. Thank you for posting details |

Offline | Sorry for the further post... I noticed that the "cold start" thread has decreased new entries, during last month. What is the cause? 1) warmer climate ![]() or 2) new updated components for MCS at the Oxford plant ![]() What do you think abt this? ![]() |

Online | hopefully yes..... I have a feeling they won't exactly give the part numbers out of the replaced parts though ![]() Should be a good test over the weekend as I am supposed to get it back on friday night and we are forecast for snow and allsorts so it should rear its ugly head if its not fixed! |

Online | It's definitely a temperature/pressure related problem as over the last 7 months I have had this, it is only with cold weather that it seems to happen... I fear that as it is slowly warming up, the noise will happen less and less frequently and so the dealers will say all fixed with the new timing gear.... until we come back into the cold months again towards the end of the year when we are all another 12 months out of warranty and the noise returns.... |

Offline | This question was brought up in NAM and it has probably been discussed in this thread. Has anyone experienced this cold start problem in a regular MC? It appears that the vast majority of problems have occurred in the MCS. |

Offline | I'm not entirely sure that it is a temperature issue. I've had mine for 2 winters now, and it was nothing like this the first winter. And here in Norway, it's pretty damn cold from September/October until the middle of April. But today it was like 10 degrees, and the rattle is as bad as ever. Last edited by viden : Apr 2nd, 2008 at 09:38 PM. Reason: That is 10 degrees Celcius - 50F :-) |

Online | how strange there seems to be no exact cause at the moment that we can pin this down to? Everybody seems to have slightly different conditions that affect their cars... |

Offline | Mine is still at the dealer, its had the new parts fitted but they are still waiting on one part to finish the job, should be here within a week. The service adviser said it had around £1,200 worth of parts replaced! ![]() |

Online | Possibly.... ![]() mine is Feb 07 build with 6500 miles. I wonder if anybody with something like an October 07 build is having any problems? I know that there was a change around July for the start stop additions (but whether this had different engine parts, I'm not sure....) |

Offline | It might be interesting to ask everyone here having this problem to state their car build and what their milage is. *touchwood* Hopefully my MCS (built in week March 2008) won't develop the problem. I'm keeping my ears peeled just in case. |

Offline | Mine is June 07 build and done 5.5k miles. I get the noise occasionally after it's been parked overnight on the sloping drive or in the garage. I can get it to run normally by either letting it tick-over for a few minutes or restart. So fortunately in my case it's too much of a problem ![]() |

Online | I know we won't find this out for the next few years, but I would be interested to know what the long term effects of this are. Think it is well known that the problem is caused by excess air in the oil at startup, but what nobody seems to know is why it doesn't happen every time at startup or if it only happens in certain conditions eg freezing temperatures, raining, car parked on a slope, low outdoor pressure, certain oil level, engine temperature etc... |

Offline | Whatever the cause it was something the engine designers did not anticipate. There have been many theories put forward by members including those by myself, but as yet not proven. One thing is certain and that is oil circulation not getting to certain parts in the upper cylinder area ![]() |

Offline | There are already owners of '08 cars with the same problem. The most recent user with the issue on NAM has a February 2008 build, and there have been others. The problem doesn't seem to be fixed as of yet. |

Offline | Still so far so good with my updated parts, what i did notice when mine was making the noise was that it seemed to do it more when it was left inside the garage rather than being left outside in the elements, so does anyone think it could it could have anything to do with atmospheric pressure? sounds a bit far fetched I know but it defintely done it more when the car was locked away ![]() |
