Offline | Notchy Gearbox - R56 MCS Picked up my new MCS on Thursday and am very pleased with it this far. I have, however, noticed that the gear change does seem a bit 'notchy', especially when engaging 1st and 2nd gears. I had a similar thing with the gearbox in my 2002 MCS (which was also a bit 'notchy'), but I had thought this was a new gearbox in the R56. I just want to check that this is just a characteristic of Mini six-speed gearboxes rather than the start of the problem people are reporting that is related to the faulty flywheel?? |

| MINI2 Regular | from my experience with the new R56 I have to disagree with Paul and SSL. The gearbox in my car is VERY notchy, however 3 of my friends cars, the gearbox is very slick and not notchy, so I would say that there is a problem with it... It may be related to the flywheel issue (as they do fit a new clutch)... |

Offline | Mmmmm.... I'm finding 2nd gear quite difficult as well. Its worse when driving the car cold ie. in the morning etc. but it seems to loosen up after a while. It was not like that when I first got it so I'm booking it into the dealer next week to see what they say. I did expect the gearbox to be notchier on the S than on my old cooper but not that notchy ![]() |

Offline | Could be the ones I've driven have all had an issue then, the press cars and my own, as they've all been pretty much the same "notchyness" as the first generation S. |

Offline | Oh dear!! Went out for a drive today and as well as the 'notchyness' there was occasionally a bit of a grating noise when engaging 2nd gear. Think it may be the start of the flywheel problems others have reported. Will just plod on for now and see if it develops further. |

| MINI2 Regular | ru81, if you want my advice I would tell your dealer about it asap. There is "alledgedly" a fix due for this problem week 12 (19th March) so if you tell them about the problem, they can let you know when the fix is available and thereby stopping any liability on yourself. it won't get any better or go away, it will only get worse... Mine did.. |
