Broken Drive Shaft on R56 Automatic Cooper

Further to yesterdays post:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/2nd-gen-faults-fixes/137199-mini-adventure-rolls-halt.html

The verdict is in:

The very expensive sounding BANG and Roll to halt is down to a broken drive shaft.

Interestingly it did not fail at a joint but before the last 2 inches in to the gear box.

Going to take 5/6 days to get the parts........................

I'm sticking with my R50 and will upgrade to a R53 when needed - MINI are making fools of themselves!

Guessing it must have been. Doubt that drive shafts for MINI's would be x-rayed for hairline cracks or the like. More than likely it was weak from the day it was made. Better that it broke in the circumstances it did than while overtaking or something more serious.

Agreed could have been very serious.

Looking back on it we were lucky. Pulling off on to a M40 motorway roundabout during rush hour was bad enough. Lucky the driver behind saw there was a problem and we were quick on the hazards.

Could have been a disaster overtaking on a country road, if you kick down the automatic in DS it can go very quick, changes from 6th to 3rd and from 2k to 6k RPM and your off!

I think we will be writing to BMW and dealer after we get the car back for a full explanation and some assurance it will not happen again.

What worries us is that we did sometimes have had the 'growling' noise (mentioned in other threads http://www.mini2.com/forum/2nd-gen-f...oise-news.html) so we hope the other cars don't go the same way. Ours is a Dec '06 build. We had sort of discounted the problem as they all related to manuals and we're not sure what transmission parts are common.

Just counting the days till we get it back, bit of a bummer as the sun is out and thats what we had the sunroof fitted for. Still got no loan car either but thats another saga to sort out.

When the gears went completely on Abi's MINI One it was scary stuff, approaching a roundabout etc with Alfie (3 yr old) in the car! Managed to ditch us off the road OK though. It's worse losing brakes on the approach to a rounadbout though, I've had that happen in a classic Mini before!

Hope it's fixed quickly and the dealer has the parts available to them.

An Update......................

Over a week now and the Mini is still on its holiday at the dealers.

Not their fault; the replacement drive shaft has still not arrived from Germany. The service department are chasing them with little response. Come on BMW get your act together.

All very annoying as it will only take 2 hours to fit when it arrives.

The failure was a clean break across the shaft, so it sounds like there was a defect in the forging or a hairline crack.

Also have found out that the shaft on the Auto is different to the Manual; supposed to be stronger ......................... Now thats reassuring.

New drive shaft finally arrived yesterday and fitted .....................

When tested the service department were not happy and on further investigation discovered the drive shaft failure had caused serious damage to one of the wheel bearings. More parts now on order from Germany. Lets hope thats not another 2 weeks to wait.

Must give praise where it is due. The Mini service department have been excellent and kept us well infomed of progress, even when there was none. Can't blame them, can only blame BMW for having no parts or inability to get them to the dealer in a reasonable time scale.

Letters will be sent when we have the Mini back. Who / where is best to send a complaint to?

Still missing the Mini........................

It does sound as though your dealer is giving you excellent service there.

The best people to write to regarding the parts shortage would MINI UK customer services. I think there details are on the MINI website L)

Finally collected the car yesterday 20 days after the breakdown.

Dealer and Service Department:
Mini / BMW Parts From Germany:

Replacement drive shaft and both wheel bearings replaced in the end, the service department were not happy just to replace the damaged one.

All seems like new again and we think the transmission sounds much quieter. We had a loan '07 plate Cooper Auto from the dealers the end of last week and it sounds like that one now.

We hope this is the end of our trips to the dealers to get things fixed for a while and we can enjoy it.

Time to write some letters now ...........................
