Offline | MCS Whistle and Squeak I went in for the Alternator recall a few weeks ago and since then (maybe it's just a coincidence) but I have had a whistle that I can hear on quite low revs .... So I took it back to the dealer and they could not find anything; Also there a squeak at idle that comes and goes followed by another one when turning off Have a look at these three videos - and let me know if you have any ideas what it could be !!!! http://web.mac.com/darren.huggins/iW...e%20Noise.html Preview of the link did not look correct so here it is again http://web.mac.com/darren.huggins/iW...e%20Noise.html |

Offline | Those kinda resembles me turbocharger and blow-off valve sounds, but yours are a "little bit" different from a normal sound. not sure, though. Good luck mate. |

| MINI2 Regular | mine does that at last i have some one else with the same problem, mine is in at the moment trying to be fixed, I am glad that there is now proof that there is a problem, How many miles have you covered? and when was your build date? mine was a november build date and covered 3000 miles |

| November build Diesel MCS | The whistle i presume is the turbo spinning up? (not a mechanic) Mine used to make that squeak though, say, after a long drive, come home and if you revved the engine like you do in your vids, as the car reached idle it would squeak, but it wasnt as bad as yours and intermittent enough so that when i went to the dealer it wouldnt do it!&$%#&*$ Bloody hell im getting frustrated looking at this stuff! Did your car make this noise at the dealer? Those vids are very clear and i know i sound like a stuck record from previous posts but that is not right! It could be something small and easy to fix and maybe someone with a more mechanical mind could shed some light as to what it could be, but dont get fobbed off, insist it gets investigated. Mine was a November build with approx 3,700 miles btw |

Offline | R60 Mike, Just covered 3300 miles and was a Jan 07 build - I have just been over to the dealers again armed with my footage and they have booked it in again - initially they suspect that air is leaking from somewhere - your guess is as good as mine :-) |

| MINI2 Regular | I was told the same first time that it was an air leak, but then told that performance would suffer and havent noticed any drop off second tec guy last friday then said it may be some thing to do with the air con and told me to keep the button on all week but the noise was still there I wonder when I pick my car up if it will be yet another characteristic of the car, my car certainly has alot of character at the moment and its not a good one |

Offline | I'm not a mechanic but the squeak to me sounds like a bearing drying out,I wonder if the alternator should have been greased or something before being put back into the car. with the whistle that could be the turbo spooling up,but i notice on mine that sometimes I can hear the turbo other times I can't......weird good luck anyhow Den |

Offline | Well after a visit to the dealer, the tech guy was excellent they have decided to replace the alternator, belt etc...... will have to see what happens once thats done. The techie also went on a road test where we reproduced the "ruler twang" so this has also been logged for further investigation. |

| MINI2 Newbie | I cant get on to the links but im guessin it could be what my car did. I had the alternator and all the bit conected to it replanced and also the steering pump and it still made lots of funny noises, it turned out to be the water pump and the bits conected to to that, all been replace now and its not making the noises anymore :-) |

Offline | Engine Noises My regular cooper is making that squeaking slash whistling sound only more consistently. No way to tell if they are the same problem, but the sound is similiar. I would call it a whistle for us because it doesn't cut in and out, it stays at one pitch. It only happens when our engine gets warm and sits at idle, the squeak or whistle is pronounced and sustaining. Once we drive off or rev the engine the noise goes away. Depressing the brake or clutch changes the tone of the whistle for just a moment, then it goes back. When the engine cools after idling for a few minutes, the noise goes away. Sound like we're sitting in the same ballpark? ![]() One other thing, I've noticed the noise seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine block, down aong the side near one of the spinning belts. I wish I knew specific names, sorry. I have an appointment for mine next week. PS, Brilliant video! Makes talking about all these things much easier. We all should have it. | VW GT Sport 170 TDI | Hmmm. Watched your videos. I reckon they just didn't set the auxilliary belt tension correctly when they re-assembled stuff and it is slipping a little. Either that, or there was some grease/oil on the belt and that is now what's causing the slipping. Anyway, it doesn't sound at all serious to me. I would drive it like you stole it until something blows up or the noise stops. Certainly it wouldn't bother me enough to take it to the dealers until it got a lot worse. ![]() |
