Offline | Steeve, I had an R56 Cooper courtesy car for a few days, and found that below 2k rpm in 4th (around 30ish) it was so unresponsive, barely pulling away at all, sounds like the car I had was similar to yours. My R56S is fine at 30 in 4th, it doesn't struggle and pulls away strongly. Dont remember my r50 cooper being anything like as unresponsive as the new cooper (that i drove anyway) at these low revs. |

Offline | My 55 reg cooper will quite happily sit at 30 in 5th and pull away fine without stuttering at all. Obviously its not breaking any speed records but it certainly isnt labouring. |

Offline | That's My Story, And I'm Stickin' To It!!! I know I'm old, but I have driven manual shift all my life. I tried the 30 mph in 4th, and I shifted down real quick. To me, these are machines and are meant to perform well under the general mechanical envelope. Sure, you can do it, but is it good for the machine??? Someone above mentioned laboring the engine and I agree. Think of how sloppy all the parts are, unbalanced, etc. That is why they have the different gears. However, we all have our own way of doing things. Good luck, and the only thing I can say is: It is more fun to drive a Mini in it's proper envelope!!!!! |

| Steeve | Now we have put a few more miles on the car, (my wife hasnt been able to drive so it sits in the garage) we have found that the flat spot tends to be at the same pedal position, rather than at the same revs. So its something like 50 in sixth we have the same dead spot, it would seem to be a problem with the pedal assembly rather than an engine tuning issue. Really spoils the drive of the car, almost dangerous, as you slow down to join a round about then go to accelerate away you have to go through the dead band in every gear and it can catch you out. Let see what the Dealer has to say as the car is in to correct some very poor quality problems (like trim missing, broken front bumper, damaged trim etc etc.) |
