Wind Noise

Ive only recently been drving my MCS at higer speeds (on the motorway). However I have noticed a very high pitch wind noise (I dont have a sunroof, but have Aero Kit). Has anyone else had this problem or know of a fix.

I spoke to Woodmans who had a guess that I might need the windscreen re bonding into place. I dont really fancy this but I trust Woodmans if anyone to do the job right.

what I have noticed popey especially on the motorway is the amount of wind noise caused by the windscreen wipers.

on each stroke there is a loud swishing noise which becomes very annoying on a long wet journey.

WIND NOISE.

This may not be relevant, but if you set the Heating & Ventilation direction control to the foot-well area with the fan on and drive at 70 mph or more, then you will hear a very high pitched wind noise. Change the direction control to another area, and the noise stops!

Don't worry about having the windscreen rebonded Dave, this is a common problem with MINIs and one that is almost always solved in this way.

I'm sure Woodmans, or whichever windscreen fitter they use, has had plenty of experience doing it!

In fact in my MCS at speeds over 160 km/h there is a constant whistling noise which has nothing to do with the wipers (even if I move them the sound is there). I have found out from some other guys here in Greece who have had the same issue that the problem was solved after removing and glueing back the rubber thing that sits between the windscreen and the roof. I am planning to take a ride to my dealer from September on and I will let you know about the results.

At speeds above 85mph I get a 'windy sort of noise' which is difficult to describe!

It's a MCS purchased new 05/07/07 with A/C.

The sound comes from the area of the heater controls when I have the A/C off, and the air flow directed to the windscreen and the fan on 1st click. It only starts at 85-90 MPH and gets worse as the speed increases. As I reduce speed so the noise reduces, and stops once i get to 80mph.

The noise is high pitched......almost like a whistle!

Very annoying, maybe the car has a built in sensor to stop it going above the speed limit!

Does it happen when you have the air recirculation button pressed? When I got my R50 serviced and they replaced the pollen filter, it whistled over 60mph. The pollen filter had not been seated corectly.

It went away when you pressed the button - give that a go

wind noise

First weeks of ownership I noticed a whistle around 40mph and discovered that if you turn off the heater (ive auto climate control) you get a whistle, turn the fan back on and it vanishes 2006 model

Hi All,

The car has manual A/C, and the noise occurs at 85mph or more. This is with A/C OFF and air distribution switch set to distribute air to the Windscreen, and fan running at low speed.

I've had the car since July 5th this year, and the problem has just started. It would appear to be caused by a surge of air entering the heating/ventilation system causing something to spin and make a high pitched whistling noise.

As it only occurs at high speed it is difficult to replicate unless I'm driving on a long open stretch of road.

Thank goodness I am not the only one getting wind noise at autobahn speeds - it also happens with a headwind. It seems to be coming from either the front of the sunroof or the top of the windscreen. There are two flappy rubber bits above the a pillars and I wonder whether they are resonating at higher speeds? Really annoying so you have to turn up the stereo and cover it with the distortion from the stereo.

wind noise

1400 kms incredible fun and almost faultess, will give a full review of my impressions after 1800 kms and opening her up a bit. When I say almost faultless I am also experiencing this high pitched whistling at motorway speeds its the only issue I have had so far, so very interested to hear what people put this down to.

Wind Noise

Found out at last how to stop the wind noise I was getting at speeds above 85 mph

Went for a trip just now....the Air Distribution rotary wheel was set 90 degrees i.e air flow to windscreen and blower was on 1st click...no A/C on.

As soon as I reached 85 mph the noise started. I turned off the blower...noise continued and got louder at 90 mph. Turned the Air Distribution anti-clockwise one click and it stopped

Have not found the cause, but at least I can stop it happening

I have the same wind noise problem from around ~140kph to 180kph. It just dissepears when I push hard the windhield (around the rearviewmirror area). Now the car is in the authorized BMW service. As I am told, they have faced that problem couple of times. They are going to check and rebound the rubber / windshield. Hope that solves the problem without any water leakage in the future.

Wind Noise

Took the MCS for a drive this evening to get the magic 1200 miles done.

Gave it some boot on my 'private airfield' and once it reached 90 mph then the Wind Noise returned

The noise is difficult to describe, it sounds as if something is resonating behind the dashboard near the Speedometer dial as a result of the airflow at high speed

I am a bit worried about contacting the dealer, if they remove the dashboard they could cause more problems, and would also have to drive it fast to get the noise.

The best idea is to get them to send a report to BMW rather than experiment themselves.

What do you think

I have had the problem. Have been in and out of the garage 4 or 5 times and have had a new windscreen. Kept palming me off saying I'm going too fast. Had to take the mechanic out and drive at 100+ miles per hour. Problem has now been solved. Apparently the problem lies in the front windscreen pillars. There is packing that is inside there which vibrates and makes a noise at high speed. Either you get a windscreen specialist to fix the packing or let the BMW garage know what the problem is as they seem to be unaware of it.
