Angry Squeeks and Rattles

This is driving me mad!!! I have had my MCS for just over a month and it has now spend a total of 3 days at the dealer trying to rectify two really annoying rattles. The first seems to be coming from the light cluster in the roof and the second from the drivers air vent. So far the dealer has added some sound deadening in the roof and replaced the vent but to no avail. I am almost at the point of taking it back to the dealer and asking for a new one. Has anyone had similar problems?

I've had my JCW MCS for 4 days and 800 miles and I have a rattle in the centre of my dash, Had the same thing in my old cooper which went back twice for this problem. All they managed to do was put the dash back on at an angle and not cure the rattles(they did put the dash right at a later service). I'm not too fussed with my new rattle I guess i've learned to live with them and the car more than makes up for it

unfortunately you need to live with the rattles, they are inbuilt during production and there is no way a dealer will be able to fix them.

Nope, I did not pay that amount of £ to have something that rattles. Mine will be going in again and again and again to the dealer. Only way BMW will learn not to cut coners if they end up with big bills for work dealers have to carry out.

I agree with everything you say Fergus and the best of luck.

I do not have the time or the patience............ one of the reasons I too paid a vast amount of money for what I thought was a quality product.

I phoned the dealer yesterday and had a good grumble to the guy that sold me the car. I soon got a call from the service manager appologising profusly and asked for me to bring the car back in and they assured me they would address the problems.

I think the sound from the headlining/light cluser may actually be the windscreen seals as I have read on other threads that this has been a problem on the R56. Whatever it is I am of the same mindset of FergusM. I payed nearly 20k for this car on the basis is what solidly built as ultimatly under the skin it is a BMW.

Fully agree with you Furgus.

I have suffered rattles and whistles and the car will keep going back until they are solved. I too do not agree that after paying the amount we do we should have to put up with it. Rattle free or my 24K back please

One rattle to go - creaking in the speedo area which really drives me crazy - I can even hear it now when the music is on full blast

We had rattles in the speedo area and the storage compartment lid. Took it into the dealer last week and they spent a couple of hours on it. So far so good, no rattles since then!

My dooper had a loud rattle at low revs, took it to the workshop and they took the dash out bit by bit and tested the car until they could find the problem. Turns out it was foam not attached to the dash (or summit??). No problems since!
Seems like there's quite a few problems with dash build quality for the R56, expected better from BMW.
Good luck with yours!

Rattles and squeaks seem to be part and parcel of owning a MINI.... which I found out since June... After speaking to some of my MINI buddies, I was told that the MINI dashboard was a 2 piece thingy.... And the cause of this rattling was because the front edge of the dash was not flushed entirely with the front windscreen

The solution to this was to remove the dash and place a stretch of tape (make sure it is thick enough) and position it where the dash meets the windscreen. I had not have the time to remove the dash but instead slipped a thick enough piece of paper and.... presto, the rattling stopped. This also proves that there indeed was a gap between the dash and the windscreen. Try it out!

Is this for the R56 MINI?

Where do you stick the paper? Doesn't sound a very pretty solution though

Well my R56 MCS is back at Heathrow Mini. Last weeks fix didn't do the trick - The creaking is not so loud but it's still there. I hope it can be fixed this time because I have had enough now, if it can't be fixed then it's time to say goodbye. I cannot, and frankly will not live with it. Neither would I entertain - having spent the sort of money we spend on these cars - accept that forcing a piece of paper in between the dash and the windscreen to be an acceptable solution.

Heathrow Mini have been great, they understand the problem even if they can't fix it and I am sure they will try their best, the people there are great, and I have always been given a courtesy car - but it's not my car, I would recommend them to anyone, for sales and service.

I've driven enough R56's now to know that their are cars out their that don't rattle and creek, and they have all been Heathrow's courtesy cars so they have not been looked after as mine has - all perfectly rattle and creek free. My next car - an R56 (or perhaps an R55??) MCS and perhaps JCW if the insurance company let me :-), and yes, it will be from Heathrow !!
