This is crazy.

So, TLC doesn't cover brakes and pads as the documentation will have stated when you bought it (but not discounting bad sales advice from your dealer).

However, I can't believe what your dealer has done here. Firstly, they've done work without your authorisation. Given that, they have no right to expect payment and you should not pay them. If you do end up having to pay in this circumstance (i.e. because you want your car back and the dealer knows this), pay by credit card, write "paid under protest" on the invoice and make sure you get a copy. Then follow up with your credit card company.

Secondly, why did they say the discs needed replacing? If they measured the thickness and it was just below the thickness stamped on the disc, but otherwise fine (i.e. not warped) then they're bull******** you. I would have asked to keep the parts (which are yours to keep), although there's not a lot stopping them finding any old set of worn out discs from their workshop and telling you they came from your car.

After 17k, this is surely indicative of a fault and they should be going through the warranty claims process for this, not charging the customer.

What the hell are they doing changing discs and putting the old pads back on? The cost of new pads compared to the labour (and they have to remove the pads to replace the disc, of course) is miniscule. As Loui says, that's very bad.

Finally, they're charging more for replacing discs only than my dealership charges for discs and pads.

I think the rule with the disc thickness is that at the time of replacing pads, if the disc measures less than the thickness stamped on the shell then the discs should be replaced. That doesn't mean that if the disc thickness falls below that they should be replaced. At 17k miles, this is irrelevant anyway -- there must be a fault for discs to need replacing if the pads haven't worn.

Care to name and shame the dealer?

They're probably hoping that Andrew doesn't notice when the pads need replacing, hears the sound of crunching brakes and returns to the dealer. "Your discs were scored sir, so we've replaced them for you" ££££

Cowboy dealers are what give Mini and BMW a bad name. Unfortunately there are far too many of them about.

Andrew, I'd think a good well-written letter to your dealer and Mini Customer Service might do wonders here. What your dealer has done is absolutely shocking.

Once you've got your money back, never return to that dealer. They don't deserve your custom.

I'd still like to know which dealer it is, out of curiosity.

Whilst I agree with majority of what you said - shouldn't have needed changing yet / MINI should have asked/informed you first. I do disagree with the above.

In the R56 TLC book - Terms & conditions, point number 2...........it does state that TLC does not cover repair and maintainence items such as tyres, brake pads, top ups etc.
Its the etc bit thats MINI's get out.
