Mine's stopped doing it for now, but I've been advised (by my 57 plate X5 driving uncle (they are HUGE!)) to ring them up and enquire about a check up.
Let's see if I can be bothered during the holidays...

My Dooper build Aug07 also do this sometimes, coolt outside and no hard drivning!?
It must be a computer fault or something like that. I will talk to my MINI dealer about this problem and se what they say.

Unhappy Cooper D cooling fan

Am having same problem with my Cooper D In hot weather fan never comes on but it can come on when the engine is cold & doesn't turn off till I switch engine off. When I restart it it doesn't come back on.Dealer can't find fault but they say onboard computer may need total reprogramme.
Also have got a knocking at thr rear going over bumps.Dealer had car for a full day, replaced shockers & bushes etc & it is still the same.Spare wheel is firmly held & up to now is mystery Any Ideas?

Ours has been knocking occasionally on the N/S/F, not all the time and our cooling fan will stay on for 5 - 10 mins after parking up and switching of, again its not all the time and very random. Another thing it has started doing is sounding very harsh and ratley from under the bonnet almost like an exhaust heatsheild vibrating or something, and another thing thats just started is the 'Run flat' tyre warning indicator in the centre of the rev counter has started coming on and we have not even got run flat tyres on ours!! I have reset it twice the correct way and checked the tyre pressures, and its not like i dont know anything about cars as i have spent the last 15 years in the motortrade and the last 5 years Mot testing!! Think i will stick to my classic cars, less to go wrong!!!!

My fan came on last Thursday when it was minus 20°C. I had started the car and let it warm up for a few minutes before driving. The fan came on after about 5 minutes, sounding like a hovercraft as you said, I thought the engine couldn't possibly be hot enough to warrant that. The next day the "check engine" light came on. It seems to run fine, but I have an appointment tomorrow. We'll see what's up and if the 2 are related.

My Cooper D has only done this once: Short journey, and the fan stayed on after the car stopped.

just picked up the car and all is well. It was a faulty temp sensor (pn 13-62-7-535-068)

btw mines a cooperS not D, but it seems like the same problem anyway.

Mine still doing it, the hovercraft impression. Only 9 degrees outside, no heat from heater, but the cooling fan is howling away. Car is now booked in. I hope they sort it. My Cooper S also did this, but the diesel clacking noise and squealing gearbox /clutch tended to distract me from this minor issue.

Ours does it pretty often but with no pattern - hot/cold day, steady driving/traffic, usual respone from the dealers - "Characteristic"

Mines doing the same cooper d born in april. I thought it was the fan coming on when you parked up to cool the turbo down. Now i know different.
Mines going back in again due to the windows having a mind of there own. They dont pop up and seal sometimes and often drop when left un attended.
Its been in twicw already but they cant find out whats wrong. I can t be the only one expereincing this can i ?

The car visited the garage, but unfortunately there are no error codes, and so they can't diagnose or repeat the fault.

Oh well.

Got the same here on brand new Clubman Dooper (picked up last Friday, 25th Jan).

Went out last night, drove a little way (5-6miles), temp 9deg, cabin heater on (and chucking out warmth), and the engine sounded like a hovercraft . Also noticed that auto stop wouldn't work at all, so guess that meant the engine thought it needed power to keep itself in check.

Has to go back to have some damaged trim refitted, so will mention the engine fan too - wife even menioned that she could hear it indoors!

I've just popped on here specifically to check this problem out before bed.
Tonight has been the second time its happened on my Cooper D, although the first time I dismissed it (and it could be heard inside too!), its about 7°C outside and I only drove from work 4 miles down the road (which at 11:15pm meant no stopping for traffic).
I asumed it was something to do with the turbo (although I had no idea really what it was). Going to phone Robert Stern in the morning and get it looked at....that and my faulty alarm, funny vibration and tempremental gearbox

It seems to affect new Doopers on short journeys. Mine did it once, and then never again. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

My dad took mine for a spin this morning (gone about 20 minutes), when he came back the fan was blaring away (got him all the attention of the neighbours!), anyway we lifted the bonnet and it really didn't smell too clever - like something was burning.

Just waiting for the dealer to ring me back now and see what's going to happen. Bit reluctant to drive it to Worcseter though.

Is this not just to do with the diesel particle filter cleaning itself and burning off the soot in the system. There is a note in the manual that it does this every so often and that the engine noise can be different and noisier.

Mine tends to do this every 2000 miles or so, and this is all I have put it down to.

I wondered this as well, but no-one seems to have confirmed it either way yet. It certainly makes a racket!

Ours stinks like this too!! electrical smell - like a wire melting, must be the fan motor overheating!

If it is then it must be bringing on the cooling fan as part of the process, cos its deffo the fan running that is making the racket! - I have checked
