My Dooper is still doing this, most recently on Sunday after driving at approx 60mph on the Dual Carriage way and then at about 40mph down some county roads. The outside temp was 6 degrees so by no means warm. I wouldn't class the journey as short it's about 18 miles but all steady driving with little to no stop/start.

When I turned off the car and opened the bonnet there was a lot of heat coming from the turbo but the rest of the engine seamed okay. I mentioned this to the dealer and he had experienced it as well but was convinced that there was no problem.

Maybe its just the fact that the engine is crammed into a very small space with not a great deal of ventilation. I notice most of the upper Grill on my Dooper is closed up, so not allowing much air to pass into the engine compartment. I haven't heard of anybodys dooper going up in flames yet so it can't be that big of a problem!

Mine has done this today, the noise is crazy Hovercraft is a good description!!!

Today it done it at lunchtime, drove 5 miles back to work, stopped in the carpark and heard the LOUD noise over the music, opened the door and the full force of the noise hit me Que getting funny looks from the guy in the car next to me

Got home tonight again after the 5 mile journey back, pulled up on the drive and my god the noise was there again!! This time opened the bonnet for a quick look around, but it didnt feel that hot in there - it wouldnt be having only travelled 5 miles @ 30mph! Stopped the car and eventually the noise went off, then started it again, and the noise comes back

Reading through this thread it seems lots do it, does this mean its normal? Or is there a problem?

The car hasnt yet done 1000 miles, and hasnt done it before

....I seem to be spending too much time in faults and fixes lately

It is normal it seems, I will mention it to the dealer when mine goes in for its first service on Friday (can't believe I've done 12500 miles already) to see what they say but i doesn't worry me now.

Don't worry, if it's anything like mine it will be a few months before it does it again!

It is weird when the fan does kick in - there doesn't seem to be anything specific to cause it. The noise is not only worrying but embarrassing with it!

The last-but-one time when mine done it I didn't even turn the engine off and went straight to Benhams in Wolverhampton...***'s law, it stopped by the time I got there But their service guy (who I wasn't keen on to be honest) said it was normal and a common 'complaint' with the Cooper D.

The last time mine done it it carried on for well over 5 minutes after I'd turned the engine off and that was a worry.

I wonder what causes it?

Ours was at it this evening as well!
I think the dealers are just palming us all off!
A car should only do this under certain conditions and this fault seems to have a mind of its own

Aparently its ok

Because of the short journey I had done the car was not fully warmed up, but something to do with the turbo getting warm and heating the water as its near the pipe, making the fan come on full whack.

Something along those lines anyway

I didn't feel palmed off either. Looks like its just going to be something we're all going to have to live with...or love for our Cooper D's should keep us loyal, lol.

I was told that there isn't that much in the way of sound proofing for the engine so it will sound loud and there's no avoiding it.

Mine has done it as well today, really embarrassing!
This can't be normal?
short journey, mostly highway at 120km/h, only 10°C outside, arriving at stoplights and no start-stop function, had put down the music (which was very loud) and then I heard it, terrible!! After getting home and switching it off, it went going for 3 more minutes...

wonder what it will be when it's 30°C outside...
Has anyone got a dealer who said more than 'it's normal'??

Mine has gone into 'Hovercraft' mode 3 times in 8500 miles - only once was it not surprising (Top Gear 2008 ). When it goes off, it certainly draws a crowd .

Over the weekend mine done it on my (3-4 mile) trip to and from work saturday and the same again sunday - although sunday I was only out of the car 10 mins and when I started it the fan started straight away.

My dad was speaking to someone at BMW (my parents have a diesel 1 Series) and this man told him he doesn't believe the fan is normal and says I should have it booked in and checked over.

Don't waste your time!
Until MINI admit there is an issue then the dealers will be instructed to for you off with:
'It's normal Sir'
or
'It's a characteristic of the car'
