| VW GT Sport 170 TDI | Agreed - if the fan comes on with an otherwise cold car when moving it less than 20 feet, then there is clearly a fault. I would strongly suspect the engine coolant temperature sensor to be faulty and reading high. |

Offline | Oh joy ![]() Yep, its like an auto pilot system! Mind you, ive managed a whole week without the car going back to the dealer.....thought it was too good to be true! But tbh, Im not sure I can cope with it going in again, and I bet the service lot would run a mile if they see my car again! ![]() |

Offline | Just got back home from work, 5 miles in 22.5 degrees and the fan is roaring away! Today I can understand it coming on!! ![]() We've established the Cooper D does it, and also the Petrol Cooper (or at least my one) so do the ONE and Cooper S have the same problem? |

Online | This is an odd one - I could understand if it were the Cooper D and Cooper S's that did it due to the heat given off by the turbos - but on a normal Cooper too? ![]() Must be a dodgy sensor or something as simple as that though ![]() ![]() |

Offline | People found it hilarious when I had that Petrol Clubby and arrived home with the fan roaring away after my car being in the workshop, and me having moaned about it the day before! It was like every car I touched at the time broke it some way Maybe its all my fault ![]() |

Offline | This thread got me slightly worried, so I contacted my dealer (am expecting delivery of my Dooper in 4-6 weeks, by the way), and he said that that fault has now been rectified by the manufacturer! Is that the first admission that there actually IS/WAS a fault? Or is he just trying to pacify me I wonder... I suspect the latter! |

Offline | After a month of motoring I heard a wooshing sound coming from the engine yesterday that went away after about 40 seconds. First time I heard it and only heard it when i switched the engine off. Didn't sound too loud or worrying to be honest ![]() |

Offline | Quizzed my ever helpful service guy at Woodmans about this. MINI do know about this, but it is NOT a fault. Therefore, there is no fix, because it isn't broken! I was given a big technical reason as to why the fan goes off, but I was quite honest and said "so what does that mean in plain english?" ![]() Now I am not technically minded, nor a memory man, but I shall recall what I can There is a 'particulate filter' that occasionally needs cleaning out. I think it is near the exhaust. To clean out the particulates, the exhaust gases have to be higher than normal, to burn them out. The engine runs hotter and faster than it needs to, just to generate a hotter exhaust gas. To protect itself from overheating, the engine fan comes on, to keep the engine cool. This is what it is supposed to do - hence why it is not a fault. MINI admit that some users may find it "incomprehensible", especially at the fact the fan may run in sub zero temperatures. Again in plain language, "live with it" ![]() I think we are all going to have to accept it as a quirk of a Cooper D ![]() |
