Cooper D - Cooling Fan on in freezing temperatures

Hi,

Driving last night this morning in freezing conditions at a gentle pace, the cooling fan is coming on. Sounds like a hovercraft. This can't be right, or is it normal?

I had this few weeks ago, the temperature was reading about 5oc and I was doing the same journey home that I do every day. I couldn't believe how loud it was!

Although it hasn't been on since!

Mine's done it once or twice - after a while it switches of, so I have assumed that it remained on for a reason.

My other half has had this problem too. Got into cold car, on cool day and drove about 5 miles at 30mph. Why would the fan come on? It really is noisy. My Dooper hasn't had this problem - phew!

My Dooper did the same today...was 3 degrees outside, only had a short trip too. Second time it;s done it. It never did it in the 'warm' weather back in Oct. Sounded like the engine was gonna break
Worth getting the workshop to take a look?

Did any of you have the aircon switched on at the time? Remember on cars with climate when you leave it at auto it's on all the time, has a fan that comes on from time to time.

In my case, the aircon wasn't on.

Just drving the same journey that I do every day at the same speed.

I'm pretty certain that I've only heard the fan on twice since I collected the car.

Air Con NOT on in my case either - the dealer asked the same question when we mentioned it, and were surprised this happened without the Air Con on.

Mine does this too, sometimes cuts in when pulling up when you have been driving steadily, no way would you expect fan to come on. Is it something other than the fan making the noise, particulate filter regenerating or something?

has your cars never overheated
my fan was always on and off
then one morning i got in it drove about 1/4 mile
and a message come on the sat nav screen which said
stop driving, turn engine off, dont open bonnet, contact mini emegency
they changed the fan relay switch but it was still the same
so they towed it to a local garage to do more tests
but they couldn't see a problem(idiots)
a couple of weeks later i got a letter from mini to have the fan fuse upgraded its been good since

Had the same thing last week. Sounds horrendous
Took it out of my garage and drove 15 mins to my parents house.
Mixture of dual carriage and a bit through town.
Was about 5°C and raining. Air con was off.
Oct 07 build Dooper. Hasn't done it since (Touch wood)

Mine did it again tonight, temp -1C, had just driven 15 miles on an A road at a steady 50 or so, pulled in for fuel (rare ocurrence on a Dooper I know) and could hear the loud whirring, was just about to pop the bonnet to hear where it was coming from and it stopped. I'm still not convinced it's the fan making the noise.
