Occasional smell of petrol ...

HI all,

I have a Cooper R56, not a S.

On occasion, usually when cold outside, but only when the car has been sitting overnight there is a smell of petol on startup. My initila thoughts is the exhaust fumes somehow being drawn into the car.

Been to dealer, couldn't reproduce but checked entire fuel system and found no issues, and having had a chat with the mechanic he said that as it was occasional, not to worry as there were no leaks.

Different fuel pump to that on the S apparently, so not the same issue that some others have had.

My thoughts ....

Wait until it does it again, immediately turn off, wait 1/2 hour or so and try again.

If this reproduces it, then wait until the next occurance, turn off and call Mini assist.

Has anyone else had the same issue.

Many thanks,

Martin

I had this, turned out to be the high pressure cam driven fuel pump leaking from the grub screws.

Cheers, not sure this will be my issue as I don't believe the Cooper has a high pressure fuel pump, the S has.

According to he dealer, the fuel pump is in the fuel tank, so a leaking fuel pump I would guess, would not cause a smell of petrol.

Anyway, it's booked in to a different dealer, and I've requested that a particutar techy looks at it (previous experience, he's very good). Thinking about it, I'll call the dealer tomorrow to advise (out of politeness) that I'll be contacting Mini uk, to request that it's sorted. THey can keep the car until it reproduces the fault (should only take a day or two at most) and I'm quite happy that the said mechanic can take it home if he wishes.

Just taken My R56 'S' into the dealer this morning after nearly "choking" on petrol fumes, seems it needs a new fuel pump. My 3rd MINI (second 'S') and the first one I've had any problems with.

Could have turned scary!!

Well, it's been to two dealers, no fault found as such. No leaks found at all.

2nd dealer said it was "over fueling" slightly and start up, don;t worry about it. They are a good dealer so I will leave it at that.

Now the weather is warmer, it doesn't do it, only when it's cold.

I have smelled gas from inside my clubman on several occasions. It is not there all of the time, and I could not smell it when I stopped and checked (outside). This is jsut one of those things that I will listing that needs to be checked the next time I go into the dealership.

Sold the Cooper. Now driving the Traveller. I mean Clubman.
