Fuel guage

Hi everyone,

Don`t know if this is a fualt or not. When I fill the fuel tank the computer displays a range of 375 to 380 miles which I assume it calculates from the average consumption figure. For the first 20 miles this figure hardly changes. By the time I have travelled 40 miles, the range figure has fallen to 310. By the time I have travelled 270 miles the remaining fuel is only good for 50 miles. I have not tried going past 290 miles on a tank as by then only two segments remain lit and I have done about 20 miles since the warning sounded.
The discrepancy is not huge although it is annoying. If the range is calculated from average consumption I would have thought it should correct its self to reflect the actual results but it is not doing so.
Anybody else had this and do you think it is a fuel guage fault or a computer fault (or no fault at all ?)

Regards
Mike

This is probably caused by the shape of the tank more than anything else. When you fill the tank, it's not just full, but the filler neck will also be full - it takes 20 miles or so to use this extra full, so the tank stays 'full' for that period.

The range itself is calculated from your recent average, not the overall average mpg. If you drive really carefully for the five miles before filling up, your range after filling will be artificially high

Hope that helps, Jon

thanks Jon,

That probably explains things.

Is 270 miles to first warning about average on the Cooper ?

I have had my Cooper for 2 weeks now and have done 850 miles. I've only filled the car twice in that time and am getting about 400 miles to a tank. Admittedly the warning has pinged away at me, but I reckon I can easily get 375 miles before this happens.

Picked my Clubman up with a full tank. Drove home 180 miles. The gauge only went down 1 segment. The next day on a 5 mile trip, the gauge went down another segment.

Sold the Cooper. Now driving the Traveller. I mean Clubman.

That's the trouble with a segmented guage rather than a needle.

Chances are you used 1.9 segments on your trip home, and the five mile drive was just enough to use tht last tenth and extinguish the next light.

Would much prefer a needle.

I like 'em big...

I'm lucky to hit 320 with a full tank of my MCS. And by the way how do you get the range displayed? I have read the book and just can't work it out......

Since I am not sitting in my car at the moment, I am guessing on the names of some of the buttons.

I display the range by selecting the 'MENU' button on the stereo controls. Then selecting the button for "COMP". This shows average MPG, average speed, Range and Temperature. I switch back to the Radio by selecting the 'AUDIO' button, then selecting 'TUNER'? You can also hit the button on the end of the stalk to change the display in the REV COUNTER.

P.S. 423 miles for my first tank, with two blips still showing.
