Gearbox Trouble

Hi Chaps,

Am new to this forum, so firstly i say hi and that.

Anyway, my girlfireinds sister has a BMW mini cooper and the gearbox has gone bang.

We can pick up a recon unit for 500 quid and was wondering if any one on here has fitted one before or knows if it is a hard job to do.

If so, is there any garages that you would recomend that could supply and fit a recon box quite cheaply?

Many thanks for any help!

Is this for an R56 or R53? What year is your car? If it is the MK2 mini most (if not all) will have warranty so can more than likely get it done for free as long as it has not been abused.

gearboxes are not a fun item to fit..... but you can fit one if you are mechanicly minded.
If you buy the reconditioned unit in full you should get a a bentley or haynes maunal and do it yourself(you will need help lifting it out of the car and putting the other one in.)

It will take at least a day for a novice and you will need a good few tools, if you have access to a car ramp it will make life much easier.

It can cost anything from £250 to £400 to get one fitted depending on the garage and the car.
I would say the mini is a pain to fit as the engine looks like its very compact and hard to work on.

Best of look with it and i hope you get it back to full health cheaply.

Modern MINI magazine June 2007 issue had a 5 page step by step photo guide to replacing an early Midland MINI Gearbox, if you can get a back copy or perhaps a scan of the article. Modern MINI - New BMW Mini Magazine
