Mini 07 starter button instead of key

Just been looking around on the web for info on 2007 mini, found out that it might have a starter button instead of a key, has anyone else heard that,?

Wouldn't suprise me!

Keyless entry with a starter button, fairly standard these days. Plus the "official" JCW retrofit starter button has just come out.

I think the starter button will be incorperated within the centre console, speedo area.

It will be pretty much as described in the various concept reports in the MINI2 news section (Concept Detroit, Frankfurt etc.) similar (almost the same as I think) the BMW 1 Series I believe.

Sounds like fun! As far as I am aware it's going to be basically the same for the MINI (makes economic sense really), so that might be a bit baffling!

Sounds faulty

I never had that hassle with my 325

Its all about Comfort Opening, BMW are standardising this option across their range, not as standard, but as an option, if you follow...........

I had a BMW 1 series as a loaner and I wasn’t impressed by the whole keyless thing.

The remote looks like an ugly USB memory stick and once you are in the car you have to push it into a slot in the dashboard. Then you have to depress the clutch, and finally press the START button.

What is the advantage over the traditional - Put key in lock and turn?

Advantage is, with comfort opening, you don't use the key at all - leave it in your pocket, handbag, breifcase, whatever, flick the door handle, the door unlocks, sit in, press the clutch, press the button, drive off - the key never comes into play

Thanks for that. Looked at the BMW web site and the option is available on the BMW 1 Series, but at some cost.

Comfort Access system - keyless door entry - £425 !!

That would be great -- if MINI offers comfort access. But so far spy shots have only shown the insert-the-fob, press-a-button type systems. With all they're trying to do with the revamp, I wouldn't be surprised if comfort access was left off the options list for a while, leaving the early-adopters with a half-baked system to start their cars (much like some E90 owners, who couldn't get comfort access initially). I hope I'm wrong.

Just had another thought.

Why do you have to depress the clutch before starting the engine. Surely, it would be easier for the electronics to check the gearbox was in neutral before starting it?

Definitely not easier. There's a switch on the clutch pedal telling the computer it's state. Is there anything comparable on the tranny? Even if there were, either flag is as easy to read as the other.

BMW really are stuck in the dark ages. My girlfriends £9,000 Nissan Micra has this feature as standard. I'm surprised the 1 series doesn't come with a tape cassette only, rather like my 2004 £15,800 MINI Cooper S did
