Can R56 Headunit Play mp3 on DVD's?

HI There,

I tried searching the ICE forum but found nothing on this.

Can the R56 Headunit play mp3's if written on a DVD?

I am trying to justify the iPod Interface cost. But if the headunit can play a DVD I do not see the point (especially if it shows track titles etc. on the SatNav! )

My thinking is that if I can fit 250+ mp3 songs on a CD and 800+ on a DVD. With only 6 possible playlists on the iPod (when used in the R56 and a maximuim of 255 tracks per playlist) I can fit all that I would be able to play on my iPod onto a couple of DVD's. Sure there is the issue of ease of use when it comes to searching for a track. But I'm a random type of guy anyway...

I know the R56 unit will play and display mp3's written on CD.

Any pictures of this being displayed on the SatNav screen?

Thanks for the help.

I doubt it, why would Mini incur the extra cost of a DVD drive and then not utilise it for anything?

Just my opinion

It plays mp3's and the ID tags come up on the radio or screen. Also you can sort your mp3's into folders ie Dance, Rap etc (when you burn the CD)

I've always wondered why the auto makers *don't* put DVD drives in the dash. Mechanically, the cost is nearly identical. I'd give a small finger for 4+ gigs of MP3's on a disk.

Hi popey,

You should be out enjoying "The Beast" not indoors replying to my silly threads!

Spoke to Alison yesterday - she said yours is "absolutely beautiful"! Looking to do a similar arrangement, but don't worry your copyright is noted for the Blackpool area!!

Enjoy!! Keep us posted and Congratulations!

I think the iPod Interface is scratched off the option list then . I agree with SC06GVK not worth the risk.

How exactly is some thieving g*t going to know you've got an Ipod fitted, if it's tucked away in your glove box?

It's only at risk if you leave it on display !

Point noted, Purple Dave.

What I meant to say was:
I agree that if someone were to break into your car you will at least not then stand the risk of having lost your iPod AND having to fork out for a replacement on top of the costs/insurance excess of the window replacement.

Most insurance companies will not pay out for portable audio equipment.

Yes! I e-mailed Alison with my spec and she said that she will get back to me probably early next week with a price on my current car and the quote.

But I will PM you as I have a question about your website.

Is that correct? I thought that the new iPod interface on the R56 was going to be far better integrated than the 6 playlists of the 1st generation. The speculation has been that MINI would adopt the same new iPod interface as on other BMWs, which was described in a press release (http://www.bmwusa.com/news/news?article=268):
Quote:
The new Interface will also allow users to incorporate their iPods directly into their car’s sound system, but with the newly available capability to sort their music according to their own playlists, as well as by artist, album, genre, podcast, and finally, a random selection of 500 songs from the user library. Artist, album, and song title will appear in the Display Monitor.

rkw, I was quoting from the "Official Internal Notice" from MINI on this thread:

Thanks, I must have missed that thread with the posts by ~Marcus~. The interface looks very good to me. I see no limitation of 6 playlists. From the CD1 selection you can access any playlist stored on the iPod. At the beginning of the thread there was some mention of 6 playlists but it was in reference to the adapter for the 1st generation MINI.

Point noted. I can see how I might have misread the thread. That combined with the mention of CD1 through to CD6... I focused on that rather than reading that you can access all your playlists on CD1. I am however still stuck on the 255 limitation per playlist, as per the Official notice. I currently have one playlist that contains 1,522 songs

Now rather than annoying myself by having to redo my playlists I would rather write a couple of CD's... But then again... When you think about it it's pretty much the same amount of work!! Nevermind I will chat to my dealer tomorrow and see what they quote me for an install.
I think THAT more than anything will be the answer that swings it for me.
