Official MINI Portable Navigation Unit

From MINI2 news:

MINI Portable Satellite Navigation

Never going to be as slick as the factory fit option, but looks cool none the less.

Thought there would be more interest in this.

Although you could argue it's nothing more than a rebadged Garmin, and you'd not be far wrong!

Looks expensive... I'm planning on getting a TOMTOM one or TOMTOM ONE XL and getting an active cradle from mikeythemini http://www.mini2.com/forum/2nd-gen-i...omtom-one.html

Just have to try to work out if the XL one is too large for the gap where I want it (same as one offered above).

I'm just wondering how much the dealer will want to install it?

No idea, can't imagine they could charge more than hours worth of labour.

but why would you want that? garmin are generally accepted not to be as good as Tom Tom so why pay dealer inflated prices for an inferior product?

Really? My experience of Tom Tom (software) hasn't been that great. Hasn't been of Navman either though. I guess they all have their little idiosyncrasies.

we all swear by TomTom down here. Kept us all together in France recently so no worries about getting lost or loosing people.

Must admit I don't use tomtom home as that software is rubbish. But the actual unit is great and at around £200 can't be beaten IMHO. Never had any problems with the main unit software at all Maybe they have just got better and better with time

I'm not sure that I will want to go for it - or for any system at this time. That said, a good friend of mine has a Nuvi portable in her MINI now, which she "installed" herself...and she likes it.

I'm really a "hard copy" maps unfurled sort of person at present, but I keep thinking about getting one - someday and thought just maybe this might be "The One".

Well, that's something to think about - Christmas is coming and I am planning some trips. But the real question is will it bring peace betwixt me and my husband whilst negotiating a new route?

Is the mounting for the R56 only?
I would also swaer by Tom Tom only, although I have not had a chance to have any proper use of a Garmin, I like the concept you can personalise your own MINI, I think a few on here have managed to do this with the Factory Nav as well!

Seems a pretty good price to me. £380 ( minus any discount you can squeeze out of your freindly dealer ) Fit it yourself and includes OEM mounting brackets for the hidden wires / OEM look. Also includes speed camera database and Bluetooth intergration with your mobile.

Saves the cost of a bluetooth kit too.

depends what you mean by compatible - i have a tomtom go500 & N73 & i can send & receive phone calls. it won't receive texts but then you shouldn't be reading or typing texts on the move anyway - if you can you're not driving hard enough

£2000 raised & still going..
