iPod Question

If I use my iPod through the AUX plug and use a cord that plugs into the bottom (not the headphone jack)

will my songs appear on the radio with information (title etc.)?

No, you need the official mini ipod kit for that

So then what's the latest consensus on the iPod kit? I read mostly so-so comments on it. The idea that the dealer takes apart the dash (true?) to install it kind of has me leery.

Even if you don't have the info can the upgraded steering wheel at least allow you to click to the next song?

I don't care that the dealer takes apart the dash... more like the wad of cash they're charging to do it!

The kit here in the US is over $300. The dealers are charging between $150-200 to install the thing for a grand total of over $450 (USD).

I spent less than 1/10th of that and got a really nice, heavy duty AUX cable that I routed out of sight under the center console. It pulls power off the 12V socket near the front so it charges the iPod when pluged in. the cable comes out near the rear cupholder and routes up to where the iPod rests in the center, under the parking brake. I have about a foot and a half of excess cable to lift the thing up and pick songs etc.

The only way I would do the factory iPod kit is if I had the Nav package, as it displays the menus better and they are easier to navigate (not just two lines of text, but a whole menu, just like on the iPod itself).

Just my opinion, of course.

Interesting. I didn't know the dealer would charge that much for installation. They don't mention (or I didn't see) that kind of information on the configurator.
I understand the routing to the back which someone had done a great step by step. But how is you AUX cord getting power? Or are you using a separate cord?

Maybe this will work as you describe. It comes with a mini plug that could be hooked into the AUX jack. And it comes in black!

the cable I purchased has an AUX plug on one end, with two additional leads for power and ground. The other end of the cable has a plug that goes into the docking port of the iPod. Nice and heavy weight. Feels heavier than an other I've seen.

Check with your dealer. If they'll do installation for free, that's a huge savings... but when you check MINI USA's accesory page it says that none of the prices include installation. Whether it's the body kit, driving lights or iPod adaptor, you're going to pay someone to get those parts ontot he car.
