Offline | I'm leaning towards getting a new iPod Classic 80GB, it doesn't see to represent bad value for a 80GB mp3 player that will be powered by usb (afaik). But am still undecided, hence cheeky signature in the meantime! Huggy, tell me, what is the delay like, until all album/artist information is available? And when is the delay, every time you start ignition? |

Offline | 117 days till I can try this out, thats how long till my new mini arrives Thinking of my 320GB Buffalo Hard drive, connected to my usb port and powered by a power invertor. are there any good hiding spots for them? The invertor is the size of a beer can, and hard drive is about the size of a small amp. do you think this would work?? |

Offline | [Discussions make it clear that analogue audio only is available via the 3.5mm jack and control/info only is provided by usb - That's Apple's fault - shame.I'm sure the MINI setup is identical. It does mean in theory that the quality of a standard USB stick/mass storage device will be better quality. Although you could argue that it's a question of whether the IPOD's chip or car's chip are better at processing the MP3's/AAC's.[/quote] Hi I have the Bluetooth USB Audio and the Hi-Fi (I got my MCS two weeks ago). I tried IPOD Classic 160GB and IPOD NANO 8g 3. gen. (using the BMW Y Cable). I only use lossless files. Also tried a cheep 8GB USB stick, 8GB Compact flash card, 2GB SD cards (CF and SD via dedicated USB (converter) reader - multi card readers do not work ! ) I can only confirm that the quality of the sound from the USB stick, CF and SD cards is far superior to what you get from the IPODS (worst is with the 160GB classic - you can hear the harddrive). So, your supposition is correct . It is known that Ipod has a lousy DAC chip and you can not get digital signal out of an IPOD (it is possible with slight mod - some people have done this already). No matter how mediocre the Hi-Fi in the mini is ( I think this is mainly because MINI is using some crap speakers) the radio Boost audio system DAC should be much better than the ipod DAC chip hence this is obvious from testing as well. If somebody has an IPOD than use it (with some kinds of music it is still not a too big insult to your ears) . Using USB sticks, CF, SD cards brings less distortion through the speakers. |

Offline | Does an iPod work when connected as a generic USB mass storage device? I know this is somewhat defeating the purpose of an iPod (MP3 files copied to the file system can't be played by the iPod itself), but it is easy storage if you have a spare iPod. Someone on the NAM forum who has the OEM iPod adapter reported that it sounds noticably better than an iPod connected from the dock port into aux input. The only explanation he could offer is that the headunit's aux input preamp may be low quality. This it may not be the iPod's processor that is the causing the inferior sound you report. In fact, the iPod's line out is considered to be pretty good by headphone audiophiles who use an external amp. |

Offline | I've never found out how to do this and I've been searching. Redwine does something rediculously expensive and ruins the iPod. If you know I would really like to find out. Anyone know how to retro fit the USB to a 2007 R56? |
