Air Bag Help! Urgent!

Hi guys. Think i just cut through my airbag cable.....

went to halfords to check a wire which i thought was my audio wire for the rear speaker, the guy said it was because german cars tent to have the cables wrapped round each other for the audio. Anyways, i come home to wire my amp in - by chopping this wire and wiring it to a converter. I choped it, wired it and turned the ignition on and the music was still coming through the speaker and a picture of a man in a seat with an aid bag came up on the dash. Can anyone help me!?

Afraid not. I'd suggest you wait for the ICE experts to pop-up before you do anything else though.

Can you not just re-join it?

You could solder it back together or use something for joining wires together. You should be able to get something from Halfords or any car audio shop.

hmm if its your airbags i'd get it sorted by BMW (which you would need to anyway to get the light reset), if they're stuck together using tape or something they could go off while driving..

Took my car in to MINI today, and they said i couldnt get the wires repaired - id have to get a new loom - is this correct? he said it would cause too much resistance??

Possibly correct, the system is probably sensitive...and doubt a set of white connectors will make an adequate connection. Possibly a very good auto electrician can do something ? Though whether they will want to touch it with being connected to an air bag is another question.

And to be honest you don't want to muck around with connections to air bags...implications of it going off at wrong time are too big to risk.

Guessing a new wiring loom is big ££

This is most likely nonsense, There is no way you will need a complete re-wire.

I would try and find an experienced auto-electrician for their advice.

A proper re-join using solder will add an almost unmeasurable increase in resistance.

Ive just spoken to someone - he said that you can solder the wires back together and with a shrink soldering gun which reduces the resistance (apparently). Hes doine it in his Lotus and various other cars with no problems apparently.

Yes you can solder them
Solder will make a better connection than the crap connectors all manufacturers use under the seats for airbags that cause a resistance & therefore airbag light errors

Depends where you cut it. If its in the section thats detachable then i believe the part is around £30-60. If its a whole new loom thats ££££££!

He is probably correct a repaired wire would probably continue to set the warning light off as it would see the power fluctation as a fault on the airbag line.

The light needs to be reset by BMW (or a friendly rich person with the right BCU reset tool) ... i believe BMW charge in excess of £50 but stand to be corrected I'm sure

I took it in and was supposed to be £40.99 but the ECU wouldnt talk to the diagnostics so they want to charge me £103.60+VAT per hour to find out how to do it and still charged me £40.99 today even though they didnt do anything!
