Help with ipod not working through USB!!!!

Hi guys,

I picked my new mcs on Saturday morning.... On the weekend I was at my sisters and managed to connect her ipod nano through the USB port and it worked perfectly.

So when I came back home I tried connecting my nano (exactly the same as hers) to the USB and it does not work.

When connected the ipod says "Do not disconnect" which shoes that it is connected to the car. But when you go to the USB part in AUX mode the USB option is greyed out and does not let me select it.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to why my ipod nano does not connect...

Would really appreciate any help...

Thanks.

I think I may have found what the problem is. Was looking at one of the BMW forums where they say that you can not use an IPOD that is synced to mac os without the proper cable from the dealer.

Will try the reset and if it still does not work will sync the ipod to a windows pc and see if that works.

It might just be that your iPod is low on battery mine sometimes says that when its hasn't had a full charge in ages.

Ooh....! I use OSX and my iPod is formatted for Mac - I haven't tried my iPod yet as I've just been using a 4Gb USB stick. I'll try it in a short while and see if I get the same issue.

I just went out and tried my Mac formatted iPod (it's an older gen iPod) and in the audio menu I don't even get the "iPod" option - so mine doesn't work either. My wife's iPod, Windows formatted, works just fine. Damn you Windows!!!! Looks like I'll only be using my 4Gb memory stick...

I'm actually quite p*ssed off about this the more I think about it - when you have support for an Apple MP3 player you'd have thought that it would have supported the file system for an iPod as used on an Apple computer...grrrrrr!!!

I completely agree with you astilla... I synced my ipod using a windows machine and it now works with the USB... You would expect the APPLE Ipod to work with an APPLE os.....

Atleast we have now figured the problem out. I think you have to buy the £40 cable to make it work with a mac os ipod....

Mike, it looks very similar. The one I got off ebay has an additional little wheel, which winds up any excess cable - really neat . The ebay cable is also black, which is better for the more security conscious. Will plug your new one into the MINI in about 10 mins, and I shall report back this evening

Unfortunately Mike's new cable does not work .
My cable and ipod were working before removal to try the new cable.
The new cable never allows the ipod to be recognised - the USB symbol never appears.
I then plugged my original (not BMW) cable back in, and all the functions were fully available.
This was repeated 3 times to ensure my findings were correct.
Each time my ebay cable worked fine, yet Mike's cable never allowed the ipod to be recognised.
Mike's cable physically looks far superior to my cheap cable. However, mine works fine .
All the best Mike in your continued pursuit in trying to find a cable for your customers, and MINI2ers.

Am I missing something here - I've also been trying to figure out how to get my MINI to see my new iPhone - the Bluetooth works fine and (using an Apple USB cable) it charges just fine, but the stereo doesn't see the iPhone at all for use as an iPod. Are we saying that, because my iPhone is sync'ed to a Mac, I have to use a different (BMW-supplied and overpriced) cable, to get the car to recognise the device? How on earth does a cable make any difference to the file/folder format structure?

Or is this just a case of voodoo electronics?

And why-oh-why is there never anything useful on the MINI / Ministry website about this sort of thing!

Cable??

I guess a cable is always a source of problems for any technical problems. I'm definitely having issues with mine and my wife's iPhone. We have the dealer "y" cable. Here's a post that I've posted on other sites...
""
My wife and I just got a 2008 Cooper S and it seemed to set up ok for us. We got the dealer installed NAV and not the factory NAV. The bluetooth on the Garmin set up ok for us, and then we set up the bluetooth for the car. It did take both of our phones, which the Garmin then booted us off - which seems to be ok with us for now. The phone system through the center console seems to let us toggle back and forth between phones.

The ipod function will not work over bluetooth, which I figure is because the bluetooth is only really good for a handsfree device, and not data transfer (Thank you apple). So, my wife's iphone will work for ipod functions when it is hooked up with the "Y" adapter. My phone does all the same things, but when I plug it in and try to use the ipod functions, the console has all of the same controls as it should (it sees the "ipod" and can change music), however, it refuses to play music out of the speakers in the car. It continually plays music out of the speakers in the iphone. Yes, I have the "y" adapter still plugged in properly. In fact, I switch back and forth between the 2 iphones and it plays hers, but not mine.

Granted, I have had some issue with my iPhone dropping me while I surf the net or use the YouTube function and kicking me back to my home screen. I have done a complete restore, and even did a restore as a new phone to eliminate an old preference file that may be corrupt. My wife's doesn't have this problem, and it could be the reason for my issue. I continue to have the issue and will be heading back into the Apple store today. I'm quite frustrated with the iPhone.
""

HERE'S THE NEXT POST...

""I no sooner walked out of the apple store with my replacement iPhone (due to the aforementioned issues) got into the mini cooper s, plugged in my wife's iphone (I took it with me in case I needed to show someone) and her phone was now giving me the same issues. Once I got home and re-installed everything, my phone works now..."

My bluetooth does not function properly now, but my wife's does. Yes, the mini sees it, but I have to go through the dealer installed garmin.

I am solely on mac, and will not change. The mini dealer said they wanted to take in the car and both phones. possibly for a day or two, so that they can try to figure it out.
