Mini seem to have completely gimped the setup with the R56, making it a lot harder to do pretty much anything. It's probably deliberate to encourage you to buy their optional extras. However it just makes people more annoyed - expecially when the Hifi upgrade isn't much to shout about. Changing the stereo I hear is nigh impossible. And don't ask my about putting some new speakers in!

I took my R56 Cooper down to Turners Audio and they said they'd fit a new head unit in in the box above the glove compartment and do everything from there. They did spec. me a nice setup with a 12" Pioneer sub, so it's possible that way.

How would you control the separate head unit - using the MINI controls on the centre stack, MFSW or would it just have it's own controls.

What was the price range they quoted?

The standard controls can be used on the central unit. For extra control, the additional head unit would be used. I also get a remote control with the new head unit, otherwise it would certainly be a pain to change tracks just on its own. I don't have the MFSW so I don't know how that would work.

The whole setup including fitting was £700. They gave me a demo of what it would sound in a similar setup and it sounded very impressive. They do have a good reputation aswell, winning quite a lot of lucrative audio competitions etc.

I'm undecided at the moment. They have as good a reputation as you do, and they're local, saving me time and money.
